Marr Kratin
Marr Kratin (literally 'death by the sword' in older xxayu dialect) is a form of Vodranti ritual combat. Utilizing mauls, spears, maces, swords, knives, and all the deployable blades within an Emuna rig, it is (often lethal) one-on-one combat within an enclosed arena.
Marr Sur-Kratin is another form of ritual combat that is restricted to caestus battle-gloves. The name is actually a misnomer- it translates to 'death without the sword', but that makes the combat seem more liberal than it actually is. A caestus is not too different from the boxing gloves of today but composed of several leather strips wrapped around the right hand, with the left banned from closing, being strickly for blocks and a slapping strike.
Despite the fact Sur-Kratin does not involve any weapons beyond the gloves, it tends to be far more bloody and violent. The participants also fight completely naked, unlike Kratin which has both members wearing Enuma.
Sur-Kratin is often seen as the superior form as it does not involve damaging the valuable Enuma rigs, and also requires more skill and tends to be far more entertaining.
Marr Kratin is quick and often ends in one strike. Sur-Kratin is drawn out and does not 'waste soldiers', as it merely leaves them with broken bones rather than amputated limbs or lost heads.
