Umbria

The northwestern country of Farandis, Umbria is the technological powerhouse of the Old World.
Heavily due to the Bluestone University created over two thousand years ago, it is conceivable all of the technological prowess of Farandis over Seraht is due to Umbria. It was here that history was first recorded by the greatest minds in the lands, the separation of the schools of magic, the inception of large ships capable of travelling the high seas, and more recently the discovery of the volatile components needed to make gunpowder and the devices capable of using them.
Umbria prides itself on its forward thinking, and its almost a rite of passage in the academic world to study in one of its great Universities, at least in the Farandisian lands. Alongside the more traditional schools, Umbria also has the highest number and most prestigious Arcanums in all the Old World. This has made Umbria extremely wealthy, beautiful, habitable, and largely a force to be reckoned with.
Ruled by an elected republic, Umbria is extremely well-led in the political spectrum. While attempting to foster good relations with all the nations of the Old World, Umbria persues a foreign policy of peacekeeping, with at times actually joining in wars to force a return to the status quo. This is usually restricted to the Farandisian nations but they have interceded against small rebellions on the side of the Thuon Khor Empire in Seraht. The elected leaders are typically installed as the head of one of the Arcanums that dot the Umbrial landscape.
This policy alone is not enough to sway the peoples of the world into peace. However, the Umbrial army, consisting mostly of mages and clerics, is regarded as the most capable and destructive force in all of Vestara. Their presence alone has in the past stopped bitter wars to a halt. While relatively few in number, the Umbrial force only allows the most trained and effective warriors and magic casters, it a is a point of prestige to be counted among their ranks.
The capital, Stonepoint, is steeped in history and knowledge. It is said that it is the center of learning and magic in the world. Some myths actually claim that Stonepoint is where the weave was first manipulated, and thus the birthplace of magic. It is also where the Chamber, the representatives that form the central government, meet to discuss the political issues of the day.
