The Relics of Ylgrim

The Relics of Ylgrim are the personal effects of the ascended king Aethelwulf, left behind after his death / ascension to godhood. Whether he truly became one of the gods is debated, but it is indisputable that his weapons have been imbued with immense power. It is thought that Aethelwulf enchanted the weapons in some way, imbuing it with his power. No other examples of a human enchanting a weapon are known, as enchantment is an aspect of magic unique to the Dwarves. It is also worth noting that during Aethelwulf's earthly life, his weapons and armour bore no special properties when wielded by anyone other than him. But since his death or ascension, they now bestow abilities upon anyone who wields them. They were initially passed on to Aethelwulf's direct descendants, but since his line ended and the monarchy became elective, the Relics serve as the war-gear of Fyfeldor's current monarch.   Gefea is a sword once owned by Aethelwulf, that serves as a badge of office for the monarch of the Kingdom of Fyfeldor. It is regarded by many as a divine artefact of Ylgrim Stormspear, the aspect of Aethelwulf that is worshipped as a god by Men. Roughly translated, Gefea means 'Fortune', or 'Fate'. Gefea's blade is made from steel; the pommel and guard are golden and inlaid with precious gems that are cut into decorative shapes. Aside from its practical use as a weapon, it also grants its wielder powers very similar to the Gift.   The sword is paired with Aethelwulf's shield, known as Hilderand, which bears protective magic that heats any weapon that strikes it until its wielder can no longer use it. Famously, during the battle of Westerhill, the Giant king Vathlauss struck Hilderand when it was wielded by Aethelwulf. His enormous greatsword became white-hot, as if fresh from the furnace. The heat from the sword melted parts of his mail armour which embedded into his hand, giving him the title Vathlauss Ironfist. He would never again regain full use of his right hand. Hilderand is a round wooden shield, with a golden rim and ornate boss at its centre. It is painted blue, with the exception of a pair of white dragons also painted on its surface.   Perhaps his most potent relic, Aethelwulf's spear known as Faestian can pierce any armour and flies with unerring accuracy when thrown. The Stormspear can also summon lightning to strike at the wielder's command. Its shaft is a smooth, pale wood, while its head is diamond shaped and made from steel. It has a decorative band just below its tip, golden and inlaid with gems in a similar manner to Gefea's hilt.   Aethelwulf's armour, a gleaming golden helm and a mail hauberk, are also imbued with some of his power. They are incredibly resilient to damage, and require no maintenance or repair.
