Session 19: Homecoming

General Summary

The party, having arrived in Stonehaven, left the Secret Grove and as inconspicuously as possible, carried their deceased companion to the Tears of Creation. The temple to the Wild Mother was Ellie's former place of worship before her visit to the Shadowfell. A decision was made within the party to not tell Ellitock's father they were in the city, and after paying the presiding priest, Ellitock was given life once more.

How About a Drink?

The party opted to spend the evening within the City, and leave at first light. They made their way to the Home of the Last Hearth, at Nicha's behest and ate a quick supper before retiring for the night. Shaskan was very happy to see the group, but was not his jovial self, sensing the cloud hanging over the group and noticing the absence of Kain. Ellie questioned why the party had not contacted her father, but let the matter rest after receiving a glare from Thamior. They slept in separate rooms, and unbeknowned to everyone else, Luther snuck out into the City after midnight - eager to learn more about his new "friends".   The next morning they left Stonehaven, at first light, hitching a ride on a caravan leaving towards Breconary. Coleman and Nicha decided to stay behind while the carriage was repaired, but extended an invitation to reconnect when the party eventually made their way to Dagger Falls.

This Can't be Good

Upon arrival in Breconary, the party made a slight delay in travel to the Sage's abode, chosing to stop briefly at the local stables to say hello to Trumpet. Thamior was pleased to tell the rest of the group that she was doing well and making friends. After the light conversation, they reached the Gallentara residence, where Leoh greeted them curtly and granted entry to Gallentara's inner sanctum without so much as a single piece of a paperwork.
"This can't be good..."
Ellitock Boondiggles.
Once inside the mansion, the party located Kevros Gallentara in one of his laboratories; a cold room with a single granite stone slab, where the body of Kain lay. His lower body covered with only a towel, the necklace around his neck now pulsed with an angry yellow light. Gallentara explained how attempts to reconnect the soul of Kain with his body had failed, and that the necklace itself seemed to preventing any resurrection attempt. The necklace, it appeared, had created a pocket dimension leading to some other time or place. Kevros was uncertain where exactly the portal would lead to, but he was capable of opening it and believed it contained a breathable atmosphere. With an incantation from the sage, the light emitting from the necklace began to grow in illumination and intensity; a swirling portal manifesting at the foot of the granite slab.   The party talked amongst themselves, whether to enter Kevros' portal, or to try and find another way to revive Kain. Ellitock told Luther that he was under no obligation to come with them, but Luther brushed off the words, expressing a desire to travel with them.
"Think of the adventures! What tales I could spin of this!" Luther Lovelace
Thamior paused, asking Gallentara if they would be able to return through the portal. The sage, still concentrating on keeping the portal open, replied that he would keep the portal open as long as he was able, but not to take too long.   With those words, Luther ran forward before anyone could react, jumping through the swirling magical door before him. The rest of the party followed.

Just Deserts

As their vision returned, the party stood on a rocky outcropping, amidst a vast desert. The blowing sands around them covering what appeared to be the ancient battleground of a horrible war. Skeletons of all manner lay exposed, or half buried all around them. Looking back towards the portal, they watched as it snapped shut abuptly leaving them trapped wherever they were now.   Ahead, possibly miles away, a single mountain dotted the otherwise empty field of sand. Something about this terrain feature did not sit right with Thamior. It looked as though it had been dropped from the heavens, rather than formed from the shifting earth beneath them. Seeing no other option, or destination, the party walked into the sands and towards the strange peak in the distance.
