Barradin Empire

The Great Empire of Man, which lays at the heart of the continent of Velandris. In the past, it spanned almost the entire length and breadth of the continent, save for the The Wild North. However, after The Melding, it has shrunk to about 25% of its former size. This is attributed to the appearance of monsters, which the Empires Legions were not suited for combating, as well upstart Mages who decided to abuse their newfound powers to claim lands which belonged to the Emperor. Stretched thin and outnumbered, the Empire has had to retreat many of its troops from the Outer Regions, back to The Heartlands, in an effort to defend its inner provinces and its ancient capital, Cantra.

Structure

The Emperor stands at the head of the organisational structure. They have absolute rule over the Empire as a whole. The Emperor is advised by the council of Nobles, which are stationed in Cantra, and the Guilds, which have some of its leading members in the council. Below that, the Empire applies a kind of feudal system, where the Emperor grants pieces of land and a Noble Title to a person. In return this noble warrants absolute loyalty to the Emperor. Part of this agreement, is that the subservient party has to pay taxes and provide troops to the Emperor.   In the past, it has also happened that an influential person from the church or one of its sister organisations receives a special noble title, which comes with its own benefits and sometimes, land.
