Historical Significance

Verona Elmahdy met with the leader of the Tortle people on Shell Isle late in the year of 11 AS to discuss the terms on which they would join The Valcoran Empire. The following tells of the interaction between the two according to the official report:
  • Empress Verona sits across from Leader Damu.
  • They adress one another politely.
  • Empress Verona presents Leader Damu with a traditional gift of 7 saffron flowers and a small Chiton shell.
  • Leader Damu acknowledges the gift and thanks her.
  • Empress Verona expresses the following
Leader Damu, I have come personally to discuss the terms of your people joining the Valcoran Empire. Your people dwell here on the Shell Isle, as they have for untold generations, an island that sits off the coast of Torrezon, is part of the continent, and is there for within the control of The Valcoran Empire. My Empire. You and your people will there for submit to the my rule and the law of the Valcoran Empire. Your people will be allowed to continue living here as you see fit, but will be required to provide resources in the form of wood, stone, and precious shells. One third of your young will be taken to the mainland to begin training in militaristic combat roles and clerical healing. Your people will be paid a monthly stipend of no less than 500 gold pieces for no less than 17 years. In return you will receive the full protection of the might of the Valcoran Empire, access to Chiton, and should any of your people prove worthy, be allowed to undergo the Holy Rite of Salvation.
  • Leader Damu consideres for four minutes.
  • He pushes the offering the Empress had offered earlier.
  • He responds as such.
Mighty Empress, while we are flattered by your offering, we must respectfully decline. We are a simple people, we do we hold lofty goals, or have need of great riches. We would find more happiness remaining as we are now than we would joining your mighty empire and becoming bound into it as tightly as a fish in a net. We must decline.
  • Empress Verona stares at the returned offering without expression.
  • Empress Verona lookes to Leader Damu.
Leader Damu, your words have been heard and understood by the empire, myself and my retinue shall depart within the hour.
On the return trip, Empress Verona was said to have given the order to rally The First Fist of the Empress near the shore of The Eastern Plains to the south of Shell Isle. By the beginning of 12 AS, the army had formed and began the invasion of Shell Isle. The army was lead by the Empress herself, and was given one simple order: "Destroy these creatures who dare to refuse me."   Within two months from the moment they left the shore of Torrezon, the conflict had been completed. Every Tortle on Shell Isle had been killed, the shells cut from their bodies and piled into a mountain of empty tower shield sized shells, and left as a reminder of what those who choose to refuse the Empress of Torrezon.
