Shadeleaf village

Shadeleaf is a small gnome village at the western edges of the Spine mountains. The valley around it is quiet, the silence only broken by the sound of humming wings as tiny birds wizz through the air collecting the pollen for which this village is known

History

This gnome village is quite old, and was originally a small settlement of only a pair of farmsteads. However as the dwarven empire expanded through the Spine mountain chain gnomes living inside the mountains were forced to leave and many of the refugees ended up in this village. Over the years the village grew and settled into it's current configuration of roughly 500 inhabitants living a peaceful life with little to no organized government, choosing instead to simply solves issues between themselves as they come up.

Aviary farming

The village is nestled into the western edge of the mountain chain in a small river valley, with farmsteads climbing the valley walls, in some cases precariously so. This location makes it ideal for the farming of Mountain Hummers and the collection of Mountain Oxygyne Pollen, colloquially known as magic pollen or taste powder. This has become a major export resource for the village and virtually the sole activity of its villagers, apart from self sufficiency. The effect of the pollen, allowing food to taste like whatever the eater wants it to taste like, has also lead to the village streamlining its foodproduction somewhat. They now grow only a single grey fungus, known as Putrid Ear Fungus, which tastes appaling but contains all the necessary nutrients the gnomes need for living long and happy lives.   Aviary farming is a difficult pursuit, both during the training of the Mountain Hummers and during the collection of the pollen from their feathers which has led to the gnomes developing some quite advanced optics to releave the stress caused on the eyes by attempting to find and brush off all the miniscule pollen grains from the birds.
