Mul Species in Vallonde | World Anvil

Mul

Appearance

Mul are larger than most humanoid races, ranging from 5'10" to 6'8" on average, and weighing 200-300 lbs. Their physical structure is similar to humans, with skin tones typically tanned, ranging to a variety of moderately dark browns. Their eyes are typically colored in earthy tones; brown, amber, or green. They are entirely hairless, regardless of their gender. Tattoos and scarification are the most common ways that Mul express themselves upon their bodies, perhaps due to the lack of ability to express using their hair.

Biology

Mul are made through the union of a Dwarf and Human parents in a genetic irony that creates a race that is both hairless, and tall, quite far from their dwarven ancestry. What is not far from their dwarven ancestry is their incredible toughness, endurance, and vitality. Mul are born to mixed race households throughout the world, but can also be created through the union of Mul and another Mul. Mul age at the same rate as Humans, reaching maturity by the age of 25, though their average lifespan is 80 years, shorter than Humans. This is believed to be due to their laborious, physically intensive lives.

History

The race of Mul did not have a distinct shared history in the earliest recorded years. In the 1st Epoch the communities of the world were not as racially mixed as they are in modern society, and as such Mul only came to be in rare instances. This changed during the 2nd Epoch when Darneshi Sorcerers realized the sheer amount of labor Mul could produce through their strength and endurance. Darneshi began to capture Mul as slaves, and through slave communities the Mul grew significantly in numbers. Some other Sorcerers followed suit, and a number of Mul communities emerged throughout the world. Mul developed a strong kindship with Minotaur, a race similarly exploited by Sorcerers during this period, a kinship that has endured to the modern day.   In the Great Purge of the 3rd Epoch, many Mul communities found themselves free from their oppressors. Yet, in many places Mul simply became slaves under the new regimes that emerged. Over the course of the 3rd and 4th Epochs, changes in the political landscape, and frequent revolts progressed the emancipation of the Mul people. The Darnesian Sultanate was the last nation to free their Mul slaves, as part of their reformation from the Darnesian Emirates into the Sultanate, after which no Mul slaves remained in the world.   The name "Mul" was created by their long era of oppression, before which they were simply referred to as Half-Dwarf. Mul emerged as a derogatory term commonly used by their slave masters, comparing them to a mule, no better than an animal of labor. Upon achieving their freedom, the Mul chose to adopt the name as their own rather than cast it aside, a mark of their heritage to never be forgotten, and proof that no word could stifle their perseverance against oppression. Similar to the origin of their name, Mul had adopted scarification as a response to frequent lashings. It was born as a sign of rebellion, a showcase of their pain tolerance, and a message to any slave master that they could withstand whatever punishment levied at them.   In modern society Mul live throughout the world, born to mixed race households, or to moderately sized Mul tribes. Mul remain among the best laborers of the world, and as such find themselves drawn towards high intensity forms of labor throughout the world such as mining, sailing, construction, and travel. Many Mul also seek to honor their past by continuing to fight for the freedom of others, becoming adventurers and wanderers. Dichotism is a common religion among the Mul people, and many Mul dedicate their lives to its service. Many attribute their freedom to the worldwide rise of Dichotism, whose followers had played a large role in the steady emancipation of the Mul people. The god Artius strongly resonates with the Mul people, and even non-religious Mul may pay respect to him as an icon of freedom.
