Appearance
In their true form, Changelings have pale or light grey skin, white (or no) hair, and colorless white eyes. They are rarely seen in their true form, however, as they are able to shape change to mimic both the appearance and voice of other humanoid races. Certain distinguishing characteristics carry over from their true form to their shape changed forms. Birth marks, physical defects, scars, and amputations remain consistent despite their shape changing.
Biology
Changelings follow typical mammalian reproduction cycles, closely resembling that of humans. Their genetic origins are unknown due to the lack of recorded history among their societies, and a lack of any clear ancestor. Most scientists theorize they originate or are distantly related to Dragons, gaining their ability to shape change from them, though it begs the question of why their natural forms bear no resemblance to Dragons. The theory has only served to further ostracize them. Changelings mature faster than Humans, reaching full adulthood by the age of 16, though their lifespan is nearly identical to that of a Human.
History
Changelings are fairly rare, often ostracized for their abilities which are viewed by many as unnatural and inherently evil.
Dichotists in particular show prejudice against Changelings, thinking them to be spawns of
Kane, the god of tyranny and manipulation. Miniscule communities of Changelings live openly in peace throughout the world, wherever they can. Their largest community exists within
Meridian, where those seeking a scholarly life can find peace. Changelings are more commonly found making their way through the world alone, findings ways to survive using their shape changing.
Their abilities offer them many opportunities in regards to criminal activities, and most Changelings find professions as thieves, spies, or assassins. However, others have found their abilities useful for thespian work, or at the opera, where a single Changeling can play the role of multiple characters on stage, or sing in any register they wish. Changeling history is not well kept by its communities, with only a few oral histories having been dedicated to text in recent years by
Logicmaster historians. Even these oral histories mostly consist of anecdotal tales designed to teach lessons about survival, and cautioning against trusting other races (who are likely to turn on them upon learning their true nature). The history and origin of the race remains vastly unknown.
