Goliaths
A.K.A. "Jotnar"
Basic Information
Anatomy
Goliaths are larger than both humans and elves. They vary in color, but the most common are gray. Most of these are bald, with a few of those having horns.
Genetics and Reproduction
Goliaths are the resulting offspring of the ancient mating of humans and, if their history is true, giants. While most goliaths are sterile, very rarely a goliath is born with the ability to reproduce. Oftentimes these goliaths are born with horns sprouting from their skulls. The chances of a goliath being fertile are around 5%.
Growth Rate & Stages
Goliaths grow quickly but do not mature at the same rate. They reach their full size over the course of almost twenty years but aren't considered adults until they are almost twice that age.
Ecology and Habitats
Cold and elevated regions are often the most common places for a goliath to call home. While this was at first done to remain close to the homes of remaining giants, they have since adapted and grown quite fond of cold mountains.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Contrary to appearances, goliaths subsist mostly on plant matter. While they do eat meat to keep strong and healthy, they do not enjoy it.
Civilization and Culture
Beauty Ideals
Strength and the size of horns are considered the most important physical aspects of a goliath and partners are often sought out for displaying such characteristics.
Common Customs, Traditions and Rituals
Tattoos hold a special significance to the goliath peoples. They have a tattoo for just about any meaning: clan position, family members, accomplishments, age, name, tendencies, etc. The presence of tattoos is very important for the acceptance of a goliath. Typically, the more intricate and covering the tattoos a goliath has, the more significant the goliath is. Almost all tattoos are red, coming from an ink made from blood sap.
If a goliath is caught acting in a way detrimental to their tribe or has committed a terrible crime, they have their tattoos covered by black bands and have bold tattoos around their eyes to signify that they are not considered a goliath and are not to be aided, accepted, or acknowledged by any clan or goliath.
History
Multiple accounts of how the goliaths were born are told. By far the most common belief is that a tribe of humans had been separated from the rest of civilization when they ventured into the mountains. After they had made their first homes, a cold winter set in with powerful storms preventing escape from the mountains. Unable to care for themselves, many of the tribe members perished. They had spent the last of their food on the young children and infants they had with them, leaving them to survive alone in the mountains. The children were saved by a wandering stone giant mother who took in the human pups as her own. Raised by her hand and nurtured at her breast, the children survived. They grew to be strong and tall. Their skin became that of stone as a mark of thanks to their savior. They carried with them the world of the giants that had accepted them and the world of humans which they were born from. They were the first goliaths.
