The cycle of time marches ever onward in a loop. One era gives way to another, leaving the past a long-forgotten memory. The souls of the world are reincarnated as their era comes again; fated to relive their lives endless times. First comes the age of gods and creation, where the races of the world are created, unique and strange. Magic exists in every corner, but peace is seldom found. The races war, and magic swells. The gods war as well, driving mortals and immortals alike to fight for an upper hand. Power beyond imagining is wielded by individuals with no care for morality. Soon, gods die and the rest go into hiding, leaving the mortals alone in the darkness.   Next comes the age of darkness, where the light of the gods is absent and dangerous monsters dwell just beyond sight. Here the mortals turn to the dark gods of cosmic horror just to stand a chance of survival. The laws of reality are bent as the gods are no longer there to enforce them. Magic is uncontrollable, demons come crawling out of hell, and the dead do not stay dead. Only a united front of mortals is able to fend them off long enough for the gods to return.   With the return of the gods comes the age of kingdoms, where the gods enforce limitations on magic and mortals for their own protection. The mortals turn their backs on one another once more, vying for land and the small amounts of power they can hold. Kingdoms are erected and felled in a single lifetime, and the chaos creates conflict.   But finally science is discovered, and the age of technology begins, where magic is superceded by the laws of physics and mortals begin to take power from the gods. Magical creatures and monsters die in droves as humans take the forefront of the technological arms race. Eventually the world is stilled by the destruction and abuse of technology, with only a handful of survivors. Technology enables those remaining to become gods in their own right, and they choose to create the world anew; start over while guiding the mortals down a path better than their own.   And thus the cycle begins again...
