Market Temple

by hughpierre

Purpose / Function

Formerly a palace to the only other rival monarch on the lake, its large rooms and spacious quads now hold court to daily shops and stalls.

Design

The temple rest on its own real island to support its massive weight.   Most rooms, particularly on the lower 4 levels, are sectioned into small claustrophobic rooms full of various wares, so business is typically struck and finalized in the larger, but still crowded, hallways. However, each level defined as the space needed for a hallway to spiral upward from one end at the bottom to where it would complete one revolution and meet its end when looked at from above.   Unlike the rest of the complex, the upper 3 floors kept the décor and grandeur and uncluttered apartments to service the nobility and the rich. This part is also less like the talud-tablero construction at its base and much more free standing, with the bottom levels providing adequate support.

Contents & Furnishings

The titular temple is the one to Yacatecuhtli (the nose lord).   There are no explicit exultations to the god of merchants. Rather, prayer and devotion is expressed through the act of commerce. Making it the prime site for the most luxurious of transactions and where the most expensive items can be found.

Alterations

Half Sun Crown

The half-sun of the teotl is repeatedly crafted from brick, wood or canvas to crown many religious buildings or temples sponsored by the state.   This was added to the old structure to market the former Texicot Nation's annexation into the Triple Alignment.

Architecture

Talud-Tablero

Consists of an inward-sloping surface called the talud, with a structure perpendicular to the ground sitting upon the slope called the tablero. To maintain the ingrained angles, those panels rest on crushed boulders, with gravel and sand filled in-between to form a solid, sturdy mass.
