Atotonilco Abyss

by hughpierre

Purpose / Function

The function, of what is now called the abyss, seems to have been a graveyard or otherwise a place of mourning for the former ivory giants, as there are many hollow statues entombing the dusty, broken bones of enormous beings.   It has no purpose now, (it's just there), but those living just beyond the rim say it's haunted and give over human offerings as appeasement or as a capital sentence to rule breakers.

Entries

At the top of the Hole is the single entry at 900 feet wide and what resembles petrified sea foam of a grayish colour mounting around the rim like an ant hill. At the bottom are 8 mysterious corridors that branch out further into a labyrinth of growing and shrinking tunnels. The similarities to the Mountain Blood in the Bad Step is easy to see and has led many to think that they lead into each other.

Sensory & Appearance

The abyss' walls are of a black and oily composition that quickly swallows the sun shine and leaves Lesser Atotonilco in perpetual night. Looking down from the grey rim, one would see hundreds of little starlights beaming out from the walls as the inhabitants lights fires to see. Looking up from the slums, the sun itself seems to act as the lid to the abyss and the largeness of the Hole makes hearing beyond ones own neighborhood a chore.

Denizens

Though all three of the Atotonilco districts are tributary provinces, only the greater and the lesser are settled right on the abyss.

Greater Atotonilco

Situated on the edges of the main entrance, the citizens here are better off than those in Lesser Atotonilco. They have a tendency to irrationally fear the abyss, however; often throwing people over the edge and giving trouble whenever Lesser Atotonilco inhabitants surface for work.

Lesser Atotonilco

Situated within the abyss, itself, citizens eke out a living by essentially desecrating an ancient site. It has led to a perception that they are dirty and disrespectful to everything better than them. On the positive side, they are undoubtedly very creative, rummaging through the centuries of trash older peoples from earlier settlements had thrown in to their improvement.

Contents & Furnishings

Mounted along the Hole's walls, shoulder to shoulder and head to toes, are hundreds giant statues, presumably representing the giants in death as they were in life. They are depicted as looking as humanoid as a Kin with thick-looking skin and spears in place of cheeks.

Alterations

From where the standing statues have broken, a man can walk though the hollow remains and build several layers of connecting wooden platforms to form ramshackle neighborhoods for nearly fifty families in what is essentially a tomb.
