The Union of Dusk and Dawn

A legend within Valgeer that many believe to be the story of their people's creation.   Long ago, there was the Singer Queen, Dusk. It is believed that she was chosen at birth to usher in the darkness every night. In the beginning, the Valgeerians revered the sun and the light and they hated Dusk. She grew spiteful and would sometimes arrive earlier in the day, just to spite the people that hated her. This only incurred their wrath further. It became a cycle.   Her opposite, Dawn, was a young man from the other side of Valgeer. He visited Dusk one day; her attempts to spite her dissenters had begun to impede upon his own territory, the Dawn. And so Dawn and Dusk met upon the top of the fiery mountain in the center of Valgeer.   It is said that no words were spoken on the mountain; time and the seasons have their own language. Despite his efforts, Dawn could not calm Dusk. He could not deny that the people were possessed of an unjust hatred for her and so she left.   It is on her way down the mountain that the tale comes to a head. Dusk is approached by a shadowy figure. She warns him that no mortal is allowed on the fire-mountain; she says the Twin Flames of the Sun and Moon will surely smite him for his insolence.   The stranger ignores her advice, instead asking her if she could play him a song. Dusk's Harp was the instrument that brought the darkness to Valgeer and none yearned for its sound. Until this man. Curious, Dusk played for the man.   The sound rolled over the mountaintop until it reached the ears of Dawn on the other side. The tune, somehow familiar yet not, entranced him. He began his walk to its source. Meanwhile the man rose to his feet. His face was hidden in the shadow of his hood, but his voice rang with an ancient echo. He said, "Too long have the powers of the Light bore over the powers of Darkness. All agree that Darkness is nothing without the Light to set it apart, but none acknowledge that when the Light reaches crack and crevice unseen, it is the Darkness that welcomes it."   "Go," he continued, his body burning away in a dark flame. "Go and meet the Dawn, Bringer of Dusk. The Light and the Dark must become one."   "Who are you?" Dusk said.   The man was gone, the smoke that remained went with the wind. "I am He that Paints with the Shadows and the Light."   Dusk watched the smoke pass over the land and turned to see Dawn approaching. The two once more met on the mountain, this time truly met, and they spoke without words. From them came a new people, not of darkness or light, Dusk or Dawn, but of the union.
So speaks The Shadow Painter. It is by his hand that our world is defined and it is by his words that we unite and become one. One in light and one in dark. Unity perfected.
