Saint Horis

Saint Horis Lockwelle (a.k.a. Saint of Embers, Master Fyrian)

A genius Fyrian of incredible power and one of the Saints worshiped by the Fellowship of Suns. He is known as the Saint of Embers and the Master Fyrian. After Saint Aloria's death, it was the Lockwelle bloodline that became the royal inheritors of the Alorin Empire.

History

Early Childhood

Horis Lockwelle was born to two servants of the Kildre family, a bloodline carrying the Fyrian blessing. However, none of the Kildre displayed the powers of a Fyrian, but Horis did. The blessing had apparently lain dormant in his own family's bloodline.   Lord Kildre decided it best to train Horis; though Fyrians are defined by the inherent control they have over their abilities, he saw it wise to remove uncertainty from the boy's mind. And so every day, Horis would study under Lord Kildre in much the same way one would teach an heir; a thought that frightened the Kildre children, but the Lord was always insistent that Horis would never inherit his title.   Horis's childhood was uneventful, especially compared to those of the other Saints, such as Saint Tagara. However, the Kildre family, as royals of Fellend, was pulled into the war against the Sutherland Brotherhood, an alliance between the southern regions of Turgstan and Sygmaer.

Meeting the Saints

Several years into the Sutherland Invasion, the Kildre family manor was approached by a group of slaves that had escaped a Sutherland fort. Lord Kildre, eager to obtain information from them, welcomed the slaves into his household. For several days they stayed in a guest room adjacent to Horis, who had talked with them at great length. Horis found himself infatuated with the one known as Miral.   However, it was the youngest of the slaves, Aloria, that asked Horis to accompany them. It was their intention to join the fight against the Sutherland Brotherhood. Horis was unsure at first, not wanting to leave the Kildre family, but it said he had a dream that night, a prophetic one, that showed a fiery songbird flying over the southern mountains where all its inhabitants bowed before it. Never a religious man, Horis struggled with the meaning of his dream. It was during this period that he began speaking with Miral, a fellow inquisitive spirit and skeptic. Despite Miral's seeming apathy for the gods and cynicism towards prophecy, she encouraged Horis to take some meaning from the dream, even if only to figure out what he really wanted.   He made his mind the following morning to accompany the slaves on their journey. Horis managed to convince Lord Kildre to allow him to leave and he bid farewell to his family, both his parents and the Kildre family.

The Sutherland Invasion

The party had set off for Lindolfin, one of the cities on the frontier of the war. They defended a village from the Brotherhood with the aid of a man named Rajke, who would later join their party.   They found Lindolfin already under assault by Prince Velin of Sygmaer and his forces. Seeing the city in desperate straits, the party almost left but Aloria stopped them, saying this is where they needed to be. Aloria came up with a plan for each of them. Rajke and herself would work their way into the city where they could aid in the planning of the city's forces. Tagara and Yolde would sabotage the equipment besieging the city.. And Horis and Miral would distract the main force with their own unique magic.   Horis set the surrounding forests alight with fire as Miral set up false figures and conjured sounds that made it seem an army was approaching. This display drew the Brotherhood's attention away, allowing a Lindolfin counter-attack to surge from the city and lay waste to the invading army.   The royals of Lindolfin thanked the group for their aid. They had officially joined the fight against the Sutherland Brotherhood.

The Phoenix Rises

Given the resources of the allied Northern forces, Horis dug deeper into the Fyrian Arts than anyone since the age of the Golden Dominion, when Fyrians were countless in number. He was able to efficiently establish a system of ashways, allowing the Northern forces to consistently outmaneuver the Brotherhood for the rest of the war.   However, perhaps most impressively, he rediscovered an art long thought lost: Infernic Architecture. The ability to wield fire not to destroy, but to recreate by the wielder's intent. It was this power that allowed him to slay Prince Velin in single combat before finally killing the king of Sygmaer, Balron the Iron Lord, with the aid of his friends, Aloria and Tagara, putting an end to the war.

A Lonesome Throne

Horis Lockwelle was present at the coronation of Aloria the Forever Queen. Unfortunately, not many years, he was present at her funeral as well. No official cause was given and few have dared to speculate. But her funeral was not a quiet one. From the flames of the funeral pyre, there came a voice:
Let not the tears of mourning and despair extinguish the fire we've built. I have passed, but my memory will linger on. When in doubt, when you believe unity seems impossible, look to the lives and actions of my family, the ones here before you. Tagara, Miral, Horis, Yolde, and Rajke. They are the beacons that will guide the way forward. They will stumble and fall. But they will always rise again to meet the sunrise.
Always rising, always united. These are the words that will forever lead and follow the men and women before, the ones I name the Fellowship of Saints. The only family I've ever known.
— The Spirit of Queen Aloria on the day of her funeral
By the will of Aloria, Horis, now Saint Horis, was named Emperor, with the crown and duties to be passed down to his descendants. Once a reclusive and scholarly man, Horis learned to lead and rule with the aid of Rajke and Yolde. However, Tagara left the Heartlands to wander and find her place in the world. Miral disappeared not long after, a cause of great grief for the newly-named Emperor.   With the passing of Rajke to old age, it was just Horis and Yolde overseeing Aloria's Empire. It was some time before Horis married a royal lady from Sygmaer, once the enemy of the Saints, and had several heirs. They say he was a dutiful husband and a doting father, but the spark in his eyes would sometimes fade, as if lost in a distant memory.

Legacy and Worship

Horis Lockwelle is one of the Saints worshiped in the Fellowship of Saints. He is primarily seen as the patron saint of study, magic, and royalty. He is the most ubiqitously worshiped of the Saints, likely due to a lack of any controversy surrounding him, in contrast with Yolde's blasphemy or Tagara's bisexuality.   However, he also has little in the way of fervent followers, such as the Hawk's Talons, radically-devoted followers of Tagara. Many attribute this to reclusiveness while others attribute to his relative closeness to the early citizens of the Empire; many of the Saints rarely interacted with the common people on any sort of public standing due to a natural disdain for public speaking, such as Yolde or Miral, or due to simply not being present, such as Tagara or Rajke, who passed early on. This allowed many to see Horis up-close and as a person rather than a distant ideal.   Historians agree that this is ultimately a good thing due to the Lockwelle's role as the royal family. If any radical sects did form devoted to their progenitor Horis, it could cause some trouble for the royal family. In a sense, Horis is the ideal Saint due to his rather tame character. Of course, Aloria's words did not exclude Horis; he is still an ideal to be followed, flawed as he is (like all Saints). In Horis, one could find many lessons. Lessons of loyalty and resolve, to follow what must be done as opposed to what is desired. Or lessons of achieving a destiny set out by oneself. Horis spoke about the dream he had and he believed it was not a dream bestowed upon him by Altri or any other god, but simply a visualization of his inner struggles and desires at the time.   Whatever lessons can be learned from the Master Fyrian, he stands at the forefront of history. He will always be the flame that stands above all others and welcomes them into the hall of eternity.
