The Elder Brotherhood Headquarters

Written by Raymondrowell

Nestled in a large natural cave situated on the very edge of Lake Mesitan, the entrance of which resides underneath a very pier in the Middledocks, the cave extends back into several open spaces that have been expanded upon in recent years.
In the distance the dull thud of hammers on iron can be heard vibrating through the tunnels, it sounds as though up to ten men are mining a new tunnel.   The Slaves of The Elder Brotherhood are working to open a hole in the wall to gain access to The Great Alisar Catacombs where The Fallen Star is said to rest. To date the Slaves have been unable to widen the hole as the cavern seems to be magically protected.
The hole is no bigger than first sized and leads into a totally dark space. Deep breathing sounds can something's be heard emanating from the whole accompanied by a gush or suck in of stale air.

Purpose / Function

Serves as the secret hideout for The Elder Brotherhood, most of the cavern is naturally formed, this can be seen from the moist walls and rough surfaces. Some rooms have been expanded by the Brotherhood to serve as sleeping rooms, storage, and dining rooms.   At the furthest of the cave, a new tunnel has been expanded towards the limits of The Great Alisar Catacombs at the end of this tunnel a tiny hole no bigger than a clenched fist resides in the center of the wall, various marks around the hole show the work that's taken place. It's clear however that the workers (all slaves) have been unable to penetrate the wall.

Design

  1. Entrance under the 3rd pier in the Middledocks this done underwater, the water is prevented from entering the cave via a lip at the edge.
  2. A storage cave that's not being used, it's lit by many small glowing fungi
  3. A man-made cave converted into a storage room, contents
  4. Portal room.
  5. Dining room.
  6. A locked room, design to hold up to 3 occupants.
  7. Living quarters.
  8. Camp room for workers/slaves.
  9. The Grand Wizards Henry Bourgios room.
  10. Tunnel to The Great Alisar Catacombs no access, slave crews trying to open tunnel.
  11. Freshwater source, possibly connected to the city wells.

Entries

There appear to be two entrances into this cave, the most apparent one is located below the docks of the Middledocks and is accessed through a wide gap that's concealed by both the piers and an S-shaped tunnel that provides a method of hiding the caves and prevents water from lapping into the caverns.   The second entrance is of a magical nature and is hidden in room four, the teleport spell originates from The Kings Tavern backroom activated by the phrase "Sapphire Hammer".

Sensory & Appearance

The walls of the cavern are predominantly moist from the harbor water and the warmth of living things, this has also created the deep and damp smells that pervade the hideout.   Much of the floor is damp and the holes and furrows are wet and filled with water, some rooms have detritus scattered on the floor by the beings that live here.

Denizens

Scattered throughout the hideout there are many members of the Brotherhood, mostly of the lower casts, Acolytes, and Dementors of the Coast. In the deeper depths particularly at the work wall, a mix of humans and dwarves work at breaking into The Great Alisar Catacombs even though they don't appear to be making any progress.

Alterations

Several rooms have been created from the wet rock to serve as sleeping and eating rooms, several serve as storage.

History

On close inspection, some of the rooms appear to have ancient paintings on the walls indicating that they may have served as a meeting place for ancient peoples. In several natural rooms can be found scattered bones brushed into the corners, these look to be from the original inhabitants.   The cavern was flooded when large barrels of ale exploded causing a mass cave in and flooding from the lake.
