Sanglici Myth in Valayo | World Anvil

Sanglici (san-GLEE-chee)

He who recovers the Sanglici from its sacred resting place shall prove himself worthy of its gifts. Beware the balance that must always be.
Unleashing the Sanglici shall awaken a great and terrible power.
Spoken by a seer in her final moments, this prophecy gripped the nations of Imbria at the end of the 4th century of the Divided Era.   It was later discovered inscribed in various texts and engraved in several locations, including Arcanis Academy, once the headquarters of Reginald Emerson's Witches' Might Group. No one could verify if these inscriptions and engravings originated before or after the prophecy was spoken.   Nevertheless, it spawned a frenzy of conjecture, treasure seeking, and conspiracy theories.

A Myth Spawning Myths

Worthy of its gifts

What traits make one worthy?
Valor? Intelligence? High-level magic?
What "gifts" do the Sanglici bestow?
Power? Fame? Longevity?
Over the years, stories have developed foretelling the bravest Imbrian gaining immesurable strength to strike down foes, of the smartest gaining the charisma to lead, the kindest gaining untold fortunes, the most powerful witch gaining immortality, and other variations.   Some of these stories have become fables, of a sort, indicative of a person's or culture's valued characteristics. Some insist the recipient recieves a particular gift depending on their personality, which is why the gifts are not identified in the original prophecy. Others insist there must be multiple favors conferred on whoever finds the relic.

Beware the balance

This line of the prophecy hints at some sort of cost to gaining the power or gifts of the Sanglici. In many tales, this has become some sort of sacrifice the hero must make in order to gain the relic's power and save the world. What this cost or sacrifice is varies based on the story.

Awaken a great and terrible power

Most scholars and philosophers point to the recipient being that very great and terrible power, refering to people's ability to do acts of good and of evil.   Others speculate the awakening of great and mythical creatures such as demons or dragons.
Still others believe it refers to the Mage Rising myth that foretells the return of mages to once again rule over the land.
Mage versus Witch
The distinction between a mage and a witch is hazy, but generally, mages had greater magical power but were more limited in the type of magic they could wield than witches are. See Magic Tiers for more.

Cultural Impact

This prophecy has spawned numerous stories all throughout Imbria. It has even been alluded to in many literary works.   Various paintings, sculptures, and other works of art also feature the Sanglici and/or a victor receiving its rewards.

Waning Interest

Over the years, the Sanglici has become mostly forgotten while historians study the cultural phenomenon of such widespread fascination with the prophecy.
It would have been found by now. No. It was nothing more than the ravings of a dying woman whose mind was ravaged by years of visions.
— Salarian historian

Blood Cup

Linguists and scholars of the Ancient Language assert Sanglici translates to "Blood Chalice," though many argue that it could refer to any cup-shaped vessel.
However, the size, shape, construction, age, and location of the item (and even its very existence) remain a mystery. It could be anything from a rough-made clay bowl to an embelished, ornate golden goblet.     Additionally, "blood" could refer to:
  • Blood-red color
  • Blood used in the material
  • Blood-filled
  • Or intended for use in a blood sacrifice

  • And of course, this also raises the question of whose blood this cup is made from, contains, or is intended for.
Another theory purports the Sanglici to be carved from Bloodstone, which is capable of storing magic energy and is charged through blood magic.

This also leads to conjecture that the Sanglici could be hidden somewhere in the frozen northern country of Rhovan. Some people in Salaris, Torverath, and Necros speculate that the artefact secretly is a featured component of Rhovan's annual Blood Fest.
