Fabrication Unit

The fabrication unit is the most advanced an sophisticated piece of technology known to man. It was first invented during the founding of the original Earth Empire and has been a great asset in the advancement of human civilization as well as the cornerstone of Interstellar Colonization. The function of the unit is to create any object that has been programmed into it. It does this by stripping apart atoms into their base components and recombining them through an electromagnetic mesh field that forces the components to become whatever element the programmer desires. The following process involves contorting the newly created atoms into patterns to form solid objects. With this, something as simple as a block of iron can be created from dirt or something as complex as a plasma blaster can be crafted from thin air. Two issues that have arisen though are that in order for an item to be created an equal amount of matter has to be consumed and no organic matter has ever been managed to be reproduced by the unit. Even something as tiny as a grape has a habit of falling apart when emerging from the unit. However, these issues aside, this device is how each resident of Gurma was able to create their own homes tools and items at a moments notice and begin work on colonizing the planet so swiftly.

Utility

It is used to create any object imaginable. Most are restricted from creating weapons, but a number of hackers have found ways around the security systems. Likewise, some other unmentionable objects have been crafted, but those are more for private matters.

Manufacturing

Since the first one was made, all manufacturing has fallen on them. Countless Fabrication Units have been replicated and spread across the entire human race. To ensure that this dependence doesn't lead to a universal shutdown on creation if too many units ever break down, hundreds of thousands are stored In various locations on Earth and in space.

The Empire
Access & Availability
Almost every citizen has access to these now, and at the very least if there isn't one in every home there are plenty available for public use.
Complexity
It is highly complex, to the point that if it ever malfunctions it would be better to simply have another unit replicate a new one from the old one's material.
Discovery
Before the Empire came into power, it needed something to ensure that it could unify everyone under it's banner. Many research projects were investigated ranging from ending world hunger to create new powerful weapons that could not be contested. The Fabrication Unit was deemed a failed experiment in the world hunger research, but still proved to be useful as a utility item and thus the Empire presented it as the unifying call to bring all under its rule.
