Luther

The Lich King Luther Reginald Vayl'en (a.k.a. Lucifer)

Luther is the true hero of Vaeterra. He has a heart of gold and an unmatched intellect regarding science, arcana, and lore. His profound intelligence makes him estranged from other people and although his intentions are pure, he knows that the actions of an individual have no effect on the scales of the universe. Rather he sees humanity as a herd of sheep and himself as the shepherd. He is motivated to guide them and help them prosper, at the same time he would not hesitate to destroy the majority of the herd if it meant saving only a remainder of it. His lifetime is so unfathomably long that he is unphased by the thought of preoccupying himself for a few centuries while waiting for the population to restore itself.   His ultimate goal is to guide every soul to transcendence to achieve singularity. By achieving this, he will gain omnipotence, omniscience, omnipresence over every reality, conceivable or not. However, being that he cannot die, he is in no rush and is constantly lollygagging and exploring new hobbies.   He has seven cardinals of death who are all undead like him. They have different gifts and abilities which they use to reap lives while cheating death. Luther and his undead cardinals were excommunicated and hunted for decades and the cardinals have become much stronger over time. Because they are immortal and can not die, they've become extraordinary killers, earning themselves the name "The Red Hoods". The hoods of their black cloaks, upon inspection, are dyed a deep crimson red from being soaked in the blood of their victims.   Upon being defeated, they appear to die as their bodies immaterialize. Their new bodies are manifested back in the laboratory in the Arcaneum. Sometimes they go into hiding and are hunted down. Other times, they assassinate leaders and sabotage industry.   His cardinals are masters are stealth, assassination, subterfuge, and sabotage. Once they had proven themselves as master fighters and adept mages, Luther gave them all alchemical elixirs that would grant them supernatural abilities. Each cardinal's elixir was specifically concocted to boost their unique abilities and grant them the curse of undeath. ___   Upon finding the stone and realizing the danger it was bringing, Luther knew it was up to him to unite Vaeterra and lead it's people. He began at once to assemble a band of fighters who would venture throughout Vaeterra in an attempt to grow his army and teach people about magic. They traveled from colony to colony, but were not always welcome. They were chased out of many towns for practicing "black magic" and for dealing with the devil.   Luther's ultimate goal was to unite all of Vaeterra into a single (representative) democratic nation made up of the 7 unique provinces. He knew there were terrible evil forces in search of the stone and that Earth stood no chance of defending itself unless he was leading it.   His plan to protect Vaeterra was to create a transmutation circle powerful enough to create a legendary philosopher's stone. Using this immensely powerful stone, he would defeat the sleeping giant, a tarrasque capable of leveling every major city. ___   Luther's magic was able to preserve his body but not his mind. As he aged through the millennia, his mind deteriorated and he became incredibly forgetful. His knowledge knew no bounds but his senility caused him to become delusional, paranoid, and forgetful. He saw this coming and took many precautions to preserve his research physically and magically. In his early days, he would keep his discovery notes in enchanted journals but as time went on he invented phonographs and recorders. Eventually he became so old that he just starting writing on any nearby surface with his sharp claws. Every inch of his study is filled with coded and encrypted letters that only he can decipher. Even his furniture and shelves are riddled with carved symbols.
