War of the Throne Military Conflict in Uto Daeg | World Anvil

War of the Throne

The civil war in Evoria that lasted only a few short years. Despite the civility in the beginning, the routing of the Democracy forces to their final stand at the Stand of Wastehills. Here, the King's Force surprised the Democracy with cavalry riding over the hills and cutting through their ranks, killing Jatzetz, the Democracy leader. Seeing their fearless leader killed the remaining army immediately fled.   The war sealed the mouths shut of dissidents in the kingdom who might have still held onto the old king ways during the Clannish Wars. It also signaled to surrounding countries that Evoria was powerful enough to hold together. "Division creates weakness and suffering for all, victors and defeated alike," Manaron said after the war. Indeed, much of the country shifted uncomfortably, even regions as remote as Corridor or areas around the Lochesian Court felt shockwaves.

Important Battles

Battle of Elysia Fields

This battle was the first in the war. It cemented the Democracy as a force to be taken seriously. The King's Force saw the Democracy as a little rebellion to be easily quashed. They, however, proved that notion false. The king did not lead the force, his general did, Lucius Penhallow of the Penhallow Great House. He was, unfortunately, killed in battle. A few cavalry archers of the Democracy rode up quickly and slew him. A tactical retreat was ordered and Manaron came down from Hlee to lead his armies.

Battle of High Creek

This battle showed the superiority of the quick-moving Democracy siege weapons. They easily fortified a position near the High Creek that divided fertile Elysia with desolate Elysia. They took a small hillock and from there barraged the King's Force. This was after some small skirmish victories by the King's Force, so their morale was on the rise. It fell with the arrows and boulders hurled at them from far away. This broke the spirits of the King's Force and with Manaron back in Hlee due to health concerns, this paved the way for the Democracy to march up to the gates of Hlee.

Sortie at the Hlee Gate

After a few punishing skirmishes the King's Force regrouped in their stronghold of Hlee. It would take a divine miracle to save them now. Luckily, just when the Democracy surrounded the gate and began to pummel it with their siege, Ashlohihm, the cloud giant barbarian and one of the 24 Champions, charged forth from the gate and led a sortie against them. They beat the attackers back, Ashlohihm's fury unrestrained and his honor-bound duty unleashed.

Battle of Verdant Fields

The King's Force, hot in pursuit of the Democracy, managed to catch up to the quickly retreating army. The Democracy rounded themselves and tried to strike out against them, but the King's Force engineers started to figure out the machines of war. One of the large spear-arrows pierced the Democracy cavalry commander, Julean Everbranch. The Democracy fell back again, but the King's Force did not follow as hotly as they had, their soldiers spent and winter setting in.

Siege of Dalth'it

The King's Force pushed the Democracy miles away, back to its home in Dalth'it. Now, the weary Democracy hid behind the formidable walls of Dalth'it while the King's Force engineers mastered the Democracy's hastily left siege weapons, turning the outer walls of Dalth'it to rubble. Jatzetz and the Democracy tried their hand at a sortie, though underhanded as they went out under cover of darkness. They did end up routing the King's Force back to just north of Louvryit. In the flee, Manaron was wounded, spurning the Democracy harder.

Rout in Elysia

After distancing themselves through clever tactics, the King's Force managed to regroup in the fields of Elysia, staying in the homes of farmers and recuperating while the Democracy fell for their ploys. When they met, the two sides clashed fiercely and much of the farmland in western Elysia is called "little Deadlands" due to the seemingly permanent red that covers the fields and seeped into the ground, rendering the soil mostly useless. The Democracy fled west to the Wastehills.

Stand at Wastehills

This last-ditch effort to stave off the King's Force for the warring season required much planning on both parties. Gambits and tricks were devised by the Democracy, and similar methods were discussed among the King's Force. In the end, the famous battle played out with a strong advantage to the Democracy, being in the hills and charged down against the King's Force. However, just when a rout seemed eminent, a band of fierce light cavalry charged from behind the formations of the Democracy and slew Jatzetz and his retainers. The Democracy, having their spirits broke again, scattered.
