Drakovar
Drakovar, sometime called the Dragon Kingdom, is a kingdom in the northern part of Atres.
Government
The head of Drakovar's government is a king or queen. To become the crown prince or princess, one must be eldest child of the current ruler. After that, they would have to seek out a dragon priests and receive their blessing. To gain this blessing, the priest will require them to embark on a quest. These tasks can be as simple as taking a pouch of gold into a dragon's lair or as difficult as locating a long lost relic. Upon the completion of all these tasks, they will be allowed to become the ruler of Drakovar. The type of land a noble has lordship of will often determine determine how other nobles and the royal family will treat them. Nobles that control territory on the edges of the country are often respected by other nobles and wealthy merchants because of how they can influence trade going in and out of the country and their role in being the first line of defense if the country goes to war. Nobles that rule the lands in the center of Drakovar have stronger relationships with the royal family because they would be responsible for defending them. They also try to have stronger ties to the church because the areas closer to the center of the nation usually have more people and having a dragon priest's favor is an easy way to gain the loyalty of the people they rule over.Culture
Drakovarian culture mostly revolves around dragons. The dragon-worshipping Church of Deydrak is state religion of the country and has a large impact of the lives of Drakovar's citizens. It is by far the most popular religion in the nation, overshadowing even the Human Pantheon, which is surprising because most of the population is human. While it is not illegal to hold other beliefs, it is looked down upon. The exception to this rule is merchant, travelers, and adventurers who live outside of Drakovar.
Even though the chances of an ordinary person being able to use magic are just a small as they would be anywhere else, users of arcane magic are more respected here than any other place in Atres. The influence of dragons on both the land and people of Drakovar has led to the creation of many powerful sorcerers. Many believe that being born with ability to use magic shows some connections to dragons. If one of these sorcerers becomes powerful enough, it is possible for them to become a noble.
Half-Dragons are also revered, as a large part of the royal family is made up of them. They are seen as mortals that have been blessed by Deydrak.
History
The land that eventually became Drakovar contained several small villages and because of how close they were to the mountains of northern Atres, caught the attention of some of the dragons that lived there. Each of these settlements would be ruled by these dragons, who demanded absurd amounts of food and valuable items. This would soon change, as Deydrak killed several of the dragons that ruled over these villages. While his intentions at first did not involve helping the humans that lived in the area, he did decide to aid them after being offered all the gold the previous draconic overlords had hoarded. After liberating the rest of what is now Drakovar, the people revered Deydrak and asked him to stay and protect the newly formed nation, which he agreed to.
Deydrak's ascension to godhood caused several problems within Drakovar. The nation was divided, with many people debating on who should now rule since most people could no longer directly ask their patron deity for guidance. This would lead to the Winged War, where the nobility and church would fight over the right to rule the country. This conflict completely changed Drakovar's government.
Currently, Drakovar is one of the wealthiest kingdoms on the planet. While dragons are not nearly as common as they were during the earliest years of the countries history, they are still are large part of the nations culture.
