Angler Character in Up&Down | World Anvil

Angler

Gung-ho speed demon. "The sunglasses stay on during sex".

Early Life

Rumor has it that Angler was born in the West, but how he ended up in the North or why and when is unclear. He claims that he had two sisters, but never told anyone what became of them; neither does anyone know what happened to his parents. Sometimes, he drops hints that they may or may not have died in a plane crash when he and his siblings were very young.

Adolescence & Adulthood

Angler often brags about how he managed to get by all on his own from a young age, but the reality was probably less fun/exciting and more terrifying/grim than he lets on. He is able to survive on his own easily as long as you give him a gun, a fast vehicle, or ideally both.   He got around like this quite a lot, gaining a bit of fame among the locals... but not necessarily in a positive way. He usually wasn't welcome for a long time in any towns or clans, due to being cocky, unaccepting of authority, and often playing (usually mean-spirited) pranks on people.

With the Scavengers

None of the Scavengers really remember why Angler joined them, but they're fond of him and his excellent skill in scouting, stealing things, and getting out of dangerous situations. He probably invited himself into their team at some point and refused to leave until they got used to his presence. He's the only one of the Scavengers who knows how to drive a tank (and has done this before on occasion, causing great chaos every time).   Of his team, he is probably the most openly unhinged one. His daredevil attitude carries over to all life situations, and especially combat - he gets hurt often but always is seemingly lucky enough to get away without serious injury.

The Winston Incident

During his time with the Scavengers, Angler ended up falling in love with one of the other team members - her name was Claudia. When she got kidnapped by the Legion and the Scavengers' leader, Winston, refused to save her, he caught Angler's wrath... and a hunting knife to the head. Despite surviving the assault, this rendered their leader unable to keep giving commands (or do anything else on his own, really) and Angler took over. No one of the remaining Scavengers contested this.   They keep Winston around despite his pitiful state. Angler has been making vague plans to get Claudia back eventually, but didn't go through with any of them so far. Attacking the Legion as a small independent team is not a realistic endeavour, and he knows this. Thus, their resistance against the Legion so far has been small-scale acts of sabotage and defending a bunker against attacks on the nearby town.
