Dark Elf

Pointy ears, long lives. The Dark Elves are Intelligent and cunning. Skin darker in some, very, very light in others as most tend to live underground.   Millennia ago the Elves were one people.
They were proud druidic nomads, living in harmony with nature as they had done since the dawn of time. As they delved more and more into the Arcane, one group settled down and kept exploring the darker aspect of magic.   At first all was good, but as always, power corrupts.
They felt their magic was stronger, and they were better because of it. Soon they began subjugating others of their kind, forcing them to adhere to their ways. After years and years of continued of the dark arts they where affected, little by little. Their skin became pale, some even sickly looking, their rage and savagery grew inhuman - they became the Dark Clan.   Vowing to pain and perversion, teaching their fellow elves pain was the way to power, the way to self elevation. Their culture became a perverse mockery of their former peaceful selves.   Each year they battle for supremacy - they have no king nor successor to the throne, the right to rule is won in battle. For nine days the ones deeming themselves worthy can challenge the ruler. If they win they have to fight against the rest of the challengers until the dawn of the tenth day. The one holding the crown at that time becomes the Lord of the Dark Clan. No rules apply except the fighting has to be done within the arena. A challenger might have as many men as he can spare to fight on his behalf. The last Lord ruled for 172 years. The beaten Lords body is mutilated and hung on display for weeks after, their families enslaved to the victor.   Despite not being averse to rape, torture and slavery they hold their families and houses with the highest respect. There are around 120 great families or houses, much like the clans of other races. 50 of them reside in the Dark Elf capital, deep underground. Being quite collectivist, the loyalty within these houses are absolute, each family has its duties and only in rare occasions do some members switch duties, resembling a form of caste system.
