While living in the Crypta Labyrinthus, Matthias was forced to wear duplicate clothing every day. As such, he never developed a sense of style and tends to wear wear plain clothes.

Personal history
Matthias was born on 23 October 1996 to the Caesar and Consort of the Mala, Atlas and Diana Fox. Because he is the firstborn child, he is also the current Eres. Like most Mala, he was born with Dark Magic. Because he is the Eres, his parents have had high expectations of him from an early age, and he consistently meets and exceeds those expectations.
When he was 5, Matthias began to attend the top school in the Crypta Labyrinthus. He excelled early, and he settled in well as the heir to the highest-ranking position in the Crypta Labyrinthus.
When Matthias was 11, he became friends with a boy named Julian Gray. Julian's friendship began to fundamentally change Matthias; Julian and his family had, somehow, escaped the emotional sterility of the Mala, and in private, were affectionate and loving to one another. Matthias had never felt any sort of love or affection from his family or anyone around him, and the feelings profoundly startled him. But the Grays accepted him into their fold, and it became common for Matthias to spend much of his free time with the Grays and not with his own family. (Matthias is still very close to the Grays, much to his family's disapproval.)
At 13, it was decided that Matthias would become an Emissarius (a spy spent to United Britannia and Hibernia to infiltrate). Matthias could not have picked a more perfect career for himself: he would be able to escape the Crypta Labyrinthus and simultaneously destroy the people he had been taught to hate. He threw himself into the intensive training the Emissarii receive, and unsurprisingly, he excelled in this training as well.
Recently, Matthias has trained for two years to effectively pass as a Visiting Librarian in Ilyrium. He has been in Ilyrium for only six weeks, but he has blended in perfectly. His current goal is to befriend Vesper Cross.

Matthias is not straight, but this is something he currently hasn't "dealt" with yet, as the Mala loathe LGBTQ individuals.

Currently, Matthias is an Emissarius in Ilyrium. In Ilyrium, he masquerades as a Visiting Librarian.

Mental Trauma

Although Matthias was not close with his family, he is mentally traumatized from losing his entire culture in such a short time. As such, he is often plagued with nightmares and panic attacks. It has been suggested that if Matthias didn't work as an Archivist then perhaps he would not suffer so much psychologically, but Matthias believes that his work is more important than his mental state.

Motivation
Matthias desires to help the Mala seek their revenge on the witches of United Britannia and Hibernia.

Family Ties
Like most Mala, Matthias is not close to his family. Although prior to being an Emissarius he saw his father every day, it was always for business. He saw his mother perhaps once a month, and his siblings, even less.

Religious Views
Matthias (and the Mala) are not religious. They may seek to emulate famous Mala, but that is as religious as Mala are.

Since moving to United Britannia and Hibernia, Matthias has taken to the Old Religion, although he would not consider himself an Old Follower.
Social Aptitude
Matthias's charisma and extroversion are the two main reasons he was chosen as an Emissarius; these are two qualities that most Mala lack. These qualities meant that Matthias blends in easily with the witches of United Britannia and Hibernia.

I'm actually not sure when Matthias will pop up! I'm thinking it will be Book 2, but he may feature in Book 1, too. Who knows? (Because it's not me...yet!)
