Food and Drink

The cuisine of United Britannia and Hibernia is all about comfort; meals are meant to be sustaining both physically and magically.

Common foods

The most common foods used in UBH cuisine include meat (especially beef and lamb), seafood, potatoes, cheese, bread, eggs, beans, and vegetables (carrots, cabbage, brussel sprouts).

Common drinks

The most common drinks are tea (stolen from humans, although witches do not care to admit that) and water. Alcohol is also popular.

Typical meals

Typically, meals are taken with the family. However, on Friday and Saturday nights, it is common to go out with friends to restaurants. (Although, especially with young adults, it is acceptable to take meals with friends during the week.)
  • Breakfast: Breakfast is typically with the family. Most mornings, everyone works together to prepare a meal of eggs, sausage, and toast. On mornings when everyone is on the go, toast is the go-to option.
  • Lunch: Lunch is often taken at work and often consists of a sandwich, crisps, and some juice. However, business lunches are also popular and many Institute and Athenaeum students go out to lunch as well.
  • Dinner: Dinner is the biggest meal and is usually the time for a family to come together and talk about their day. A dinner might consist of a meat and two different vegetables, and the preparation is shared by the entire family.

Eating out

Many witches enjoy dining out often. There are many restaurants and pubs across Ilyrium. Restaurants are strictly divided by class, but most pubs are not.

Foreign food

Unfortunately, there is not a lot of foreign influences on food in UBH. However, the introduction of foreign foods in meals involving guests usually signals wealth.

Alcohol

The official drinking age in UBH is 18, although many families will allow their children to drink alcohol at a younger age.   Drinking alcohol is a very important component of socializing in UBH. It is not uncommon or looked down upon for witches to stop at a pub or restaurant after work to have a drink. Many witches also keep good alcohol at home to serve to guests. Providing better quality alcohol to guests is viewed as a reflection of a family's wealth.   Whisky is the favorite drink among witches of United Britannia and Hibernia, but beer is the most practical (in terms of money) and social drink. Gin and mead are also popular.
