NPC - What Level is that NPC
A word on what level is that NPC.These are generalities; however they can be used as a guide to as to what to expect when you decide to take on a group of ruffians. Most NPC’s have class levels. Where you meet them and their vocation is a good indicator of level.12th level is the max unless they are a major story NPC (or a guard/vassal/follower for said NPC)As a general rule, for a profession or career consider:
Depending on the field, the mix might change. Mostly, 15% are apprentice level, 60% are journeyman level, 15% are early master, 4.5% master, and .5% grandmaster. Arcane/Divine class skew to higher percentages at lower levels. A grandmaster, high priest is probably .1% Military/Guards/Bodyguards skew percentages to higher levels. Only 5% are apprentice, where as 25% could be considered early master, maybe 10% master. This is due to a higher learning rate at lower level. Of the people you have met – a good guess. Especially after some research.
Temples – this would include associated fields – like paladins and druids
Civil Servants, Clerks
For riff-raff, thugs, and press gangs, subtract 2 from the level for each group size. Unless a noted NPC exists in the group, rarely expect over 8th level for the leader with the majority of what you meet being 1st or 2nd level.
Outside of town.
Elves – Generally follow gender roles. Males are generally hunters (80%) of about 1st through 8th level (equivalent of a 1st through 8th level warrior). Females are generally experts of their crafts of 1st through 10th level. Due to longevity, expect higher than 12th level for the most accomplished with about 14th level max. All elves may have an extra class or two in any profession which suits their fancy, so a elven matriarch could easily be 2nd Hunter, 2nd Paladin, 4th Druid, 8th Expert in weaving.
Dwarves – Most are miners and craftsmen. However, many have a level or two of fighter/warrior. Add 2 levels for the average dwarf met.
Gnomes – Add 2 levels to the average level of the gnome as they usually branch out into other fields somewhat. Common fields they venture into are ranger, warrior, sorcerer, and wizard.
Halflings – Most are farmers.Due to rugged area, it’s not uncommon for a halfling to have a level of warrior or monk. Add 1 level for the average halfling met.
Orcs – Almost all orcs add 1 level of warrior to whatever other levels they may have. Pirate orcs may have rogue instead of warrior.
Kobolds – As per stats. However leaders do take on class levels commonly. A typical Kobold pod consists of about six to 10 individuals with the leader being about level 3.
Lizard Folk As per stats. However leaders do take on class levels. A typical lizard fold tribe might have up to 30 members, with the leader being about 6th or 7th level.
Plant-people – generally mindless, they just have HD. However, the larger they are, the more cunning they are, and the harder they hit. No one is certain where they come from – best guess is when something powerfully or emotionally charges happens in the jungle, one of these forms as an after-effect from the semi empathic vegetation. There are stories of plant people who are able to cast spells when a powerful mage has died nearby.
