Linging - Item Indestructibility
Eponymously named after the magician Cha Ling Tras, this is the process of making a magical item indestructible. He mastered this process somewhere around 3360 BC.
Within decades, the process was copied and several magicians began making permanent items, many of which would go on to be known as the Major Arcana. Another term for these items is Artifact.
Not only were the items indestructible, the magic used in their creation was self-contained. Due to this, spells used to analyze these items often fail. They will often register the item as magical, possibly even potently magical, however, the results are often confusing and can give false reads. (In game terms, the needed caster level DC is at least 75).
At the same time, null magic fields generally don't work on these items and they cannot be dispelled. They can operate in places where magic does not function and will operate normally when the magic level is fluctuating. Interestingly, when Maus Gorn passed by in the time of no magic, it was believed they all stopped operating for the duration.
Another quirk of the linging process later learned is that some essence of the creator is instilled into the item creating some randomness in exactly how each item ultimately functions. Often times, magicians find their new creation, a culmination of years of study and work, performs all the tasks it was designed to do but with unexpected possibly undesired side-effects. More than once, an item has kept enough of the essence of its creator where it will pass it along to the next wielder as an added (or negative) benefit.
For nearly five centuries, these items were thought to be truly indestructible. Then in 2813 BC, Illan Siastice discovered a method to deconstruct the process. He would keep this secret to his death, only passing it along to his eldest born. As the Illan Dynasty took hold, the secret remained in the imperial family for generations before it was lost due to the family member's waning abilities.
It is believed that the gods themselves, while having created several items using the linging process, are incapable of destroying an item once created.
