Astrology and Selenology

Astrology   The current star system resides in a remote area of space. Stars are visible, yet not as plentiful as the players might expect based on Earth. There is no galactic center to be seen except on the rarest of nights or only with the most powerful of magnifying devices or spells.   Due to the crowded nature celestial bodies in the night sky in the form of thirteen moons, seeing stars can be difficult even on the clearest of nights. Added to the fact that the world is largely a water world, cloud cover can be immense and long lasting at times.   And finally with magic being commonly understood as a physical phenomenon, the belief that stars or moons foretell one’s destiny is largely not followed. This is not to say that there aren’t adherents to the ideas (Aja did encounter a centaur whose brother was a stargazer), they just aren’t mainline and aren’t really supported by any known mechanics.   Having said that, there is a body of research in Brynthia at the Academy of Science and Magic that goes along the lines that while the stars don’t foretell one’s destiny, the season in which one is born affects variables like nutrition during maternity (due to available crops and food sources), the amount of physical activity the mother experiences, and possible amount of sunlight received. By this thought, matching the visible stars up to the season when one was born has merits of determining some general proclivities of that individual, however that is just another way of saying look more to the birth season versus what stars can be seen.   So in essence, Astrology of stars has little to no place in the world except as occasional flavoring for various eccentric individuals. The Astrology of moons is quite another story.   Selenology   With thirteen moons, many belief systems have sprung up. While largely discounted by the intellectually elite, quite a few societies have developed elaborate and extensive methodologies for determining how the moons’ position can not only tell the history of an individual but can also foretell their destiny. Entire cities have gone to war over what the moons’ indicated.   While a large cultural phenomenon, there is no magical research to actually support this line of thought.   The Academy of Science and Magic in Brynthia has devoted considerable research into these beliefs and found little support for these beliefs. As far as most advanced practitioners of magic are concerned, the moons have little actual ability to inform anyone about current, past or future personal or cultural events. This isn’t to say understanding the paths of the moons isn’t important. Many new spells during initial formulation require a fairly advanced understanding of celestial mechanics as changing tidal forces can play havoc with large-scale spell craft.
