Alar - Winged Folk

Winged folk. Alar appear as normal humans with two large feathered wings on their back.   Some have pointed ears similar to an elf, however, their physiology matches up with humans in all other ways.   The feathered wings can be about any color, however white is the most common. Most Alar dye their feathers in wild patterns, so the natural color of their feathers can sometimes be difficult to determine. Each wing when fully spread out is about 25% longer than the height of an alar. Meaning the wingspan of an adult 6' Alar would be about 15 feet.   The Alar skeletal structure is considerably different from a human. Their bones are hollow and made of a fibrous material which is somewhat flexible. This affects their overall strength, in that they can only lift about 3/4 what a human can lift.   An adult Alar weighs around 80% of their human counterpart. This weight is not enough to enable them to fly. The full mechanism by which they fly is not fully understood, however there is no doubt that magic is involved. This is easily seen in that they can fly carrying heavy loads just as easily as they would walk with the same load.   A final note of the species, their vocal range is considerably greater than that of humans. They can generally hit a 4 octave range and can also hit a decibel level where their calls can be heard for miles in the mountains.   They speak their own native language world round.   Alar are preyed upon by packs of perytons. In fact, many of careless alar wondering alone have fallen prey to the foul beasts.
