Mercenary Profession in Under an Iron Sky | World Anvil

Mercenary

"It's time to get off the train merc. Get your byuc down here." Najel called up to Raga. Raga sighed and jumped off the train. He looked over Najel to see what his new commander would ask of him first.
Mercenaries are sellswords who have a bad rep in almost every world. Most of them live from paycheck to paycheck and are willing to complete almost any job that they can find. Mercenaries take mostly combat jobs that others can't do. They also have a terrible reputation of turning traitor at the last sec. Just to get better pay. They have no loyalties and most mercenaries have a different set of honor codes and morals that they follow.

Career

Qualifications

There are no education requirements to become a mercenary. You just need basic combat skills and a drive to make money or the world a better place. Being a people person also helps but is not needed if a mercenary is good at what he or she does.

Career Progression

Mercenaries are made by their reputation. A mercenary's reputation is based on how many jobs they have done and how well the job was pulled off. The better the rep the more jobs a merc can get. The jobs can also become more and more well paying as the merc makes a more positive rep for themselves.

Payment & Reimbursement

Mercenaries are normally paid with the money of the world that they are on. They also have high fees that they demanded to be paid. Some mercs will even ask for some of the money upfront. Most employers don't like paying mercs upfront since the chances of them running and ruining the job go up. Some mercs are also willing to trade their services for food and supplies.

Operations

Provided Services

Mercs are normally hired for one-off jobs that are combat-based. They are sometimes asked to retrieve items that were stolen. Most of the time a merc is hired to go and kill a group of people or monsters.
