Miles Miller

Miles Miller is an artificer specializing in alchemy. He was involved in an accident with an ancient draconic inscriber which caused him to be inflicted with a lethal condition. After recovering from this condition, he has found himself in the employ of King Ovis of Metia, working as a chief researcher as the King realized that Metia had fallen behind in terms of military advancement.

Dragonrot Affliction

After his experience in the draconic ruin, Miles was one of only two survivors of the expedition team that had ventured deeper into the ancient cavern. Some ancient device had inscribed some sort of mark into his flesh, and the mark was spreading, cleaving flesh as it passed. Many of the other researchers had died soon after being afflicted, and the only other survivor turned out to be a changeling imposter, who Miles helped to escape the collapsed chamber, seemingly sacrificing himself. After eventually being rescued from the rubble by Samantha Nonukru, a strange woman who said that she had seen his predicament in a dream, Miles emerged into a strange world. He was sick, and was only barely able to treat his condition with his alchemical knowledge. Not knowing even the name of his affliction, he traveled to the capitol city Ovesla, but was impeded by his frequent paralyzing attacks.

Life in Ovesla

Cared for and assisted by Samantha, who turned out to command an impressive knowledge of magical healing, Miles eventually made it to Ovesla. With the war with Bratsia brewing, Miles could not stop himself from attempting to help his birth nation in its time of need, and was soon granted audience with the king, who granted him a lab and command of several other artificers. Despite his best efforts, Miles was unable to discover a cure for his condition. He was eventually approached by a mysterious old mage one late night in his lab. Initially shocked, Miles had little choice but to listen, as the mage had sealed the room and somehow prevented Miles's calls for help from escaping the room. The old mage, who hid his face behind a deep hood, told Miles that he still had a part to play, and was able to restore him to health through the use of a magical spell, which somehow stabilized the aberrant dragonmark that was killing the young artificer. After restoring him, the mage disappeared as suddenly as he had come, and was sure to modify Miles's memory so that he would think
he was eventually able to discover a potion which was able to cure his condition, and redoubled his efforts to assist his country, now owing the king his life in return for the provided lab and resources. Miles is suspicious of his own actions that night, and often wonders of some other force interfered, allowing him to cure himself, but is usually too absorbed in his work to investigate further for the moment. He has never shared this concerns with another.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Miles is a slim man, and although he is not excessively tall, he is far enough above average to appear lanky. He often has tired eyes, as he has a habit of working on research projects late into the night.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Miles was born in Metia to two parents. Miles's parents were poor, as they had run up on hard times after moving to Metia to start their new life. The young boy showed a naturally inquisitive nature, and it was clear that he was meant for an intellectual pursuit of some kind. His parents lamented that they would likely be unable to provide a sufficient education for Miles, but they encouraged his tendencies for invention and investigation nonetheless.    Miles's uncle, Garner Miller, eventually came to visit his family, and after seeing the young boy's curiosity, offered to take him to Harmesburg, where he was rising in political status for his advocation for worker's rights and safety regulations, especially as the city constantly developed new technologies. Using his influence, Garner was able to secure Miles a spot at the Grand Acadamy of Harmesburg, one of the most prestigious academies in the world.

Education

Miles was educated as an artificer at the Grand Acadamy of Harmesburg. He excelled at alchemy, but was also fascinated by his courses on ancient history and magic. Near the end of his education, Miles turned down a fellowship at the Alchemical Research Wing of St. Helja's House of Healing in Doth Kalesh, and instead chose to act as a research assistant on an expedition to an ancient ruin that had been recently unearthed on Metia. This trip would also allow him a good opportunity to visit his parents once again, as he had not seen them since he left home nearly a decade prior.

Employment

Currently Miles works as head artificer for King Ovis in Metia, a position found opportunistically during his struggles to cure his affliction after his accident in the draconic ruins.
