Fili Thanatou (Fi-lee Than-a-toe)

Fili Thanatou or "The Child's Demise" is a viral disease, from unexplained origins, which swept through the continent of Caistros in 465 AtD. The disease wiped out roughly 30% of the elven population on the continent, but only seemed to mildly affected the other Volitional Races. While the disease appeared to have subsided after the Rise of Nations in 573 AtD, isolated outbreaks of Fili Thanatou have been recorded several times over the last 1700 years, and the elven population is always the population affected the greatest. Fili Thanatou is immensely feared amongst the elven populations of Caistros, as well as throughout Ulagar. So much so, that the slightest indications of the disease are handled swiftly and without prejudice. Elves infected with Fili Thanatou appear to age rapidly, wrinkles and sunken features replacing normally soft, smooth skin. The infected also exhibit black nevus (nevi for plural) in one or both of their eyes, normally the first indication of the disease's presence. The most common belief, as to the disease's origin, comes from the human cultures throughout Caistros, who often refer to the disease as the "Malediction of the Tolerant". Humans belief the disease is a punishment cast upon the elves by the Fragments of Iamn (The gods of Caistros) for more than 3,000 years of in action during the Age of Giants. During this period, the giants of Caistros bred humans like cattle, and fed upon them like livestock, all while the other major Volitional Races on the continent failed to take any significant actions to cease the atrocities. The elves accounted for the largest civilization on the continent during this time period and yet elected to live in tandem with the giants, knowingly oblivious the plight of the ever growing human population. It wasn't until the immense havoc wrought by Fili Thanatou, that the elven kingdoms across Caistros joined the innumerable human dissidents and dwarves of Caistros and Vluadari in a rebellion that resulted in the defeat of the rule of giants and ushered in the 13 Free Nations of Caistros. Despite the eventual aid provided by the elves during the Rise of Nations, Fili Thanatou still periodically plagues the elves of Caistros, fortifying the fear amongst elven populations across the continent.
