The Royal Guard

The Royal guard is a collective of law enforcing officers that are hired by royals to make sure the commonfolk adhere to the laws. The laws that are most strictly policed are often those that have to do with incomming finances from the local royals. Elaborate family trees have lead to repetitive division of land ownership leading to some estates spanning hundreds of kilometers while others are limited to a single valley. Small variations in laws exist between different estates, though most laws are generic. Taxed are paid to the local royals who send a portion to their superiors. Often, the closer ones lineage to the ruler, the higher up in the chain one will find themselves.   For commonfolk, whose laws you follow, who you pay taxes to and who will judge over you does not only depend on region, but also on race. This is parallel to the political system in Matonga where ownership of land is not a common trait in most subcultures, and your superiors are determined by royal status or social ranking.   Royal guard members receive their training in a specialized academy. Depending on how often races co-habitate and the similarities between their laws, guard members of different races are educated by the same academy. In Clearwen for example, all races are welcome to attend training to become a royal guard in the Northern Innlands, though most students are dwarves and humans.   Depending on the wealth and ideology of the local royals as well as the crime rates, different numbers of royal guards are stationed. In the Northern Innlands, it is common for a small guard station to serve a cluster of villages. A larger town may have a station to themselves whereas a city such as Clearwen has multiple guard stations and watchtowers.
