Jubokko Tree

A foul miasma saturates the air around you, stinging your lungs with every breath. Amongst the blackened earth, a twisted husk stands tall. It possesses rotten bark that bubbles like tar. Its long branches resemble human arms arranged in broken unnatural positions. Every branch ends in finger like protrusions, contorted as if reaching out for help. Despite everything unsettling with this thing's appearance, you can't help but stare transfixed on its warped being. It's beckoning you to come closer. Just a little bit closer. Perhaps. You'll. Stay. Forever.

Overview

Environment

An ancient and terrible creature, the Jubokko tree has served as a menace throughout its existence. There is no consensus on where Jubokko trees come from or how they grow. They are found throughout the continent. Only adult specimens have ever been observed and recorded. Subjects are often discovered as either single units sitting among a clearing of blackened earth. Groups occupy a swath of corrupted land with a sparsely dense population ranging between 3 to up to 27 individuals.

Biology

Jubokko Trees drain the nutrients from the soil in which they occupy. They attract local fauna, who will congregate around its poisonous presence. Through unknown means prey will remain near the tree, falling victim to the noxious gases the tree releases into the air. Prey falls unconscious within 20 to 100 minutes and bodily functions cease within an additional 45 minutes.

Cultural Significance

Jubokko Trees have been referenced by countless cultures throughout history. Often represented as symbols of harbingers of disaster or embodiments of corruption and death.
