The moortrotters are released when the number of animals in the Moorwoods spikes and are forming a threat to Shimmerdown. They are paid per animal they deliver. Depending on how big, numerous or dangerous the animal is payment is given. High risk animals that need groups to take down will pay lots. But if the pest consists of insects the pay per insect will be minimal. But large sums of money can be made by collecting hundreds.

Other Benefits

These rough men and woman are as feared as they are loved in the Moor. People respect their efforts but also fear the normally rough looking big people that they tend to be. The pay can be quite royal sometimes. And if you're lucky you might even make enough to get out of the Moor.

Perception

Purpose

When a pest emerges and proves hard to stop, the Moortrotters are called in. These are vicious men and woman, most of them either Rêmali or half-Rêmali. They kill as many of the animal in question as allowed and deliver them back to a collection point for payment.
"The horn was heard across all of the Moor. Everyone knew what it meant... A pest. It sounded 3 times, a big one. Minutes later hundreds where lining up at the center for their permits. Weapons in hand."

Social Status

It is seen as a low profession, not unlike every other profession in the Moor. But even the people in the rich South respect them for keeping them safe. So they aren't viewed as low as most in the Moor.

Demographics

This varies, at a point with little to no need, about ~100 - 200 Moortrotters are actively hunting. But during a big pest this number can reach the thousands.

Dangers & Hazards

Danger is the name of the game for a Moortrotter. They encounter all kinds of dangers on their hunt. Be it a toxic insect that kills with one bite, or a maleji gone rogue. The job is the most hazardous around.

During The Great Pest of Tramin ~5.000 Moortrotters where active in the woods. An estimated 200.000 animals where purged.

Demand
Demand varies, when a pest as big as The Great Pest of Tramin arrises. Need is incredibly big, and almost all capeable Rêmali and even strong Rêma sign up.
Legality
It is utmost illegal to hunt in the Moorwoods if you are not a certified Moortrotter. You sign up by going to the center. You will get a permit, that notes the expiration date and type of animal that you are allowed to bring back for pay. Generally a permit lasts for 3 weeks. You can also get a contract at which point you will be a Woadwalker. These are especially feared hunters. Having specialized sets of weapons for each animal in the Moorwood. They never remove their woad face paint hence their name. When a big pest arises they are always the first to take care of big game.
"Walking past the trotters center I saw him, a woadwalker. Shouldering two big maleji, he stood there. He looked hardened by long nights in the Moorwood. His skin still tinted blue from their past hunt."
