220 / 08 / 23 - Mines Reopened
Over the last several months, many of our readers will have noticed the increasing price of metal based goods. As we previously reported this was due to a lack of ore from mines in the Olion hills. The mines were infested by giant spiders, and given the importance of the mines a unit of Outer Guard were dispatched to deal with the problem. This guard unit, under the command of Sergeant Mardin Guardian, discovered that there were more than just spiders in the mines and requested further assistance from the Council.
Given the nature of the threat, the council decided that it would be most efficient to hire mercenaries to deal with the infestation. Four groups responded to the call, Gavin's Retrievers, Gold Standard, Iceshot Company, and the Rainbow Crew. From accounts which were confirmed by Sergeant Mardin, what they found in the mines was the stuff of nightmares.
The inside of the mine was coated in thick webbing, with spiders the size of a boar prowling the tunnels. Directing the spiders was a dark intelligence, a race of spider like humaoids known as the Chitine. The renowned sage Pefin Seeker had this to say about the creatures. "The chitine were created by a race of elves that dwell underground known as the drow. These drow worship a spider demon known as Lloth and they created these creatures in her image using other races of elves as a base. By blending the elves forms with that of a spider they were able to create a race of humanoids with 4 arms and 6 sets of eyes that are capable of producing webbing. Dangerous in their own right they become truly terrifying when led by a Choldrith. The Choldrith occasionally hatch from Chitine eggs and display more spider like traits than the chitine. Moving around on 6 legs and possessing a large bulbous body and 2 arms, the choldrith can easily be mistaken for enormous spiders in dim light, but they are much more deadly. Having a devious mind and access to magic granted by the demon Lloth they lead colonies of Chitine in spreading spread and destruction."
It was several of these Choldrith that were directing all of the creatures in the mines, and it was with these demon spawn that the mercenaries had to contend. Though all experienced groups the creatures in the mine proved to be a truly deadly threat, killing the entirety of Gavin's Retrievers and Iceshot Company. Gold Standard and the Rainbow Crew also suffered losses and numerous injuries, but the surviving members combined their forces to clear out the mines.
With the mines cleared of threats, the mercenaries and the guard retrieved the bodies of the miners and the fallen mercenaries. They were given a proper cremation with the services overseen by the Rainbow Crew's priest, Payle Vinlor. Payle is well known to many in Chirin, both as a Guide of Seyr and as a devoted healer working in the Mallory Centre for Healing.
Having ensured the mines were cleared of all threats, Gold Standard, the Rainbow Crew, and the members of the Chirin Guard returned to Chirin. The owners of the mine, a consortium of investment groups, has promised to reopen the mines as quickly as possible with lucrative offers being made to experienced miners.
