220 / 06 / 20 - Poisoning Prevented
On 18 Surt a unit of Outer Guard departed Chirin on a training exercise. As they were going to be in the field for several days they took sufficient food and water to last the duration of the exercise. Unbeknownst to the soldiers there had been an attempt to introduce a potent sleeping draught into their water that would have at the least made them unable to.wake up. This would have been disastrous for the guards as they were attacked by a large group of bandits on the first night. The bandits appeared to know exactly where the guard would be camping, and clearly expected there would be little to no resistance. Instead, the soldiers were alert and ready to surprise their ambushers. As the bandits attempted to creep up on the camp the first sign that things were not going according to their plan was the deep thrum from a dozen crossbows being fired at once. As the bandits reeled from this unexpected resistance, a shieldwall was formed around the crossbow wielders who began picking off the bandits. Facing an enemy who could fight back, most of the bandits who could flee did so. Those that tried to fight back were swiftly killed and the rest taken prisoner. Though two of the guard were injured, the death of 22 raiders with a further 9 taken prisoner made the battle an unqualified success. Reporting on the encounter, Captain Arbalest Guardian had this to say, "Though the soldiers of the Outer Guard undoubtedly performed exceptionally well, the outcome would have been quite different if it had not been for the work of the Inner Guard. If they had not identified the threat, dealt with the poisoners, and found what supplies had been poisoned then it is likely the entire unit would have been killed in their sleep."
