The Bounders-Chant Family

The Bounders-Chant family are a Tiefling crime syndicate who were once some of the most influential and powerful people in the city of Gorlincks, with a member of the family always on the ruling Council for the city. When the Council became a Triumvirate, the Bounders-Chants managed to hold onto power through an uneasy alliance with the Cragslayer Dwarf clan, who also held a place on the Triumvirate. They were instrumental in preventing the Yuan-Ti from seizing power through a coup many centuries ago and pushed for the destruction of all citizens who held Yuan-Ti blood. While it is probably a good thing that this cruel measure never came to pass, the Bounders-Chants insist that if only people had listened to them, the Pureblooded Yuan-Ti would never have taken the monarchy of the city.   Historically, they have ongoing animosity with the Cragslayers due to some ancient betrayal, the details of which are not known to those outside the families. United in the face of a common enemy, the Bounders-Chants and the Cragslayers were able to block the majority of the Yuan-Ti's attempts to cut them out of the power structure. However, it was a member of the Tiefling family who brought about the downfall of the Triumvirate: a young second son of the house, Karanis, fell in love with one of the Yuan-Ti Purebloods, Meroe. The story has taken on a tragic air in the retelling: while the Bounders-Chants consider Karanis to have been naive taken in by the machinations of a seductive snake-person, in the tale, Meroe is depicted as a progressive thinker who saw her relationship with Karanis as an opportunity to bring their families together. Of course, this is all interspersed with much sighing and many declarations of undying love. Whatever the truth, Meroe's family, upon learning of the triste, tricked Karanis into betraying his family. This led to the first deaths of the Blood War, as Karanis witnessed his grandmother, father and sister slaughtered. As a final blow, the Yuan-Ti allowed Karanis to live, an outcast who could no longer even look at his one true love. If the legend is to be believe, Meroe threw herself from Meroe's Peak into the Mother Sea, but it is equally likely that her family killed her in case she decided to turn on them as a result of their actions. Karanis swore revenge on the Yuan-Ti and he and Meroe's brother Tsazs slew one another in a duel.   The ignored warnings about the dangers of the Yuan-Ti, the tragic tale of Karanis and Meroe and the Blood War have left terrible scars in the history of the family. They fled the city after the Blood War, retreating to the remote Blazes (also known as the Firefields) where only they could survive. There, they licked their wounds and built up their power and influence once more. It is rumoured that they discovered something in the Firefields that bought them a great deal, though no-one knows precisely what it was - or what they had to do to get it. Now the Bounders-Chants have returned to the city of Gorlincks to reclaim their past glories. Of course, the Yuan-Ti rulers and the Cragslayer crime clan may have something to say about it.
