Ortolan Riffraff

First Mate of Captain Malkaz Hinter and second-in-command over the Silt Sea Fleet, Ortolan is a dwarf with an eye for an opportunity and a strange kind of liking for her unreliable captain. The two first met when Ortolan was imprisoned and about to be executed by a since-vanished sect of artefact-worshippers Hinter was infiltrating under the guise of being a trader. When Ortolan spotted Hinter sneaking around the secure areas of the sect, she promised not to raise the alarm if he'd let her out. Hinter agreed and then, of course, Ortolan went straight to the leaders of the sect to trade her freedom for information on the wily dragonborn who was trying to steal their treasures. This would set the tone for Malkaz and Ortolan's relationship - Malkaz would trust Ortolan and in exchange she would wait for just the right moment to betray him. Of course, the truly exceptional cases were the ones when Malkaz would give Ortolan every opportunity to repent, and then would turn it all around and reveal that he had betrayed her instead. These days, both have rather lost the energy to keep up their mutual betrayals, but they remain firm friends. Some have intimated that there might be romance between them, but Ortolan just laughs when the suggestion comes up. Malkaz is in love with the chase, and Ortolan has a stable relationship with a Halfling merchant in Port Scoff.
