At last, at last, Captain Starsong cries, “NOW!” and the mages release the power they have built, and they throw it at the little Starseed. Light flashes so brightly it blinds them. The swirl of magic spirals through the immense branches of the Tree and into the Starseed. Her hair stands on end and she tastes metal and ozone. For just a moment, her heart stops.   Professor Nylyn and Captain Starsong both fall down dead.   “No!” she cries, reaching out to them.   Lady Sunfall holds her back. “We all knew this was a possibility. We accepted it. Even you, dear. Let’s honour their sacrifice by getting out of here and seeing their work done.”

Selene Sunfall (née Wintermist) is a highly-respected and much loved priestess of Arianrhod, Lady of the Stars who lives in Skyreach Harbour on Peridot. She is known for her uncanny intuition, her knack for healing magic, and her direct, no nonsense manner. She is also known for her exasperation and impatience with the military, despite the fact that her husband, Ruavel Sunfall, is a Flag Officer in the Avalonian Imperial Navy.   Selene, however, has a complicated past; one with equal measures of fame and infamy. This gentle, down-to-earth elven matron is, in fact, an Imperial Princess. She has also been a Star-Pilot, a Marine Captain, a war hero, and, by some measures, a traitor.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Selene was an idealistic young elf from a military family, who grew up on her mother's ship. Deliana Wintermist, Captain of the AINS Arianrhod's Pride , was a colourful figure herself -- a brave, respected Navy Commodore who had come up through the ranks by earning distinction in command and combat. Selene began her career as a Midshipman on the Arianrhod's Pride. On her 50th birthday, when she came of age, she formally accepted a commission to Ensign.   For most of her early life, Selene was unaware that she was the daughter of the Crown Prince of the Avalonian Empire, Selnaris Khi'Marinae. Her parents met and enjoyed a casual liaison during an Oroaias "Flowering of Love" celebration on Caer'Thun. When she discovered this information, she also discovered that she had three siblings. While it is no stigma among most elven societies for one's parents not to be married, it was decided that for their safety, especially since they had been assigned to the same military unit, they would not publicly reveal this information. However, her true identity is known to Star Command.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Selene was in command of Voidchasers when they issued The Voidchaser Dispatch, the report that saved the Avalonian Navy from a surprise Fomorian attack and started the First Interstellar War (IW1). The Voidchasers were a much-lauded unit of "Bug-Men" in the Avalonian Imperial Marine Corps. Their combat actions earned numerous Mentions in Dispatches and several medals.

Failures & Embarrassments

On two occasions, Selene and her unit specifically opposed their commanding officers in the Navy. On the first occasion, they rescued a number of refugees among the enemy from certain slaughter by the Avalonian Forces. On the second, they supported the Peridotian Mutiny .   While their support of these actions were in direct contradiction to the orders of Star Command , they were not in opposition to orders from the Imperial Prince, Selnaris Khi'Marinae. This created a political conflict between the Crown and the Admiralty.   In the end, a compromise was reached. The Voidchasers would not be court martialed for Insubordination or Treason, but Selene, who was in command, would be dismissed from Imperial service. Their records would be expunged.   Selene went one step further. Though she rarely, if ever, calls upon her Imperial father for favours or assistance, she asked her father to seal her entire Record of Service, so that she would no longer be associated with the Imperial Forces in any form.   Although, by Imperial law and tradition, Selene could have been called back to Imperial Service at any time should the Service warrant it, she was not called back to active duty at the outbreak of the Second Interstellar War (IW2). This hurt her more than she would ever admit, even to her closest confidants.

Mental Trauma

“I’m shipping out on a merchant trader,” Selena announced to them all at dinner.   Lady Sunfall didn’t look surprised, but she sighed. “I know we can’t keep you here forever, Selena, but maybe you’d consider work in the Merchant Marine instead? At least then I’d know you’d get regular leave, and the Navy can protect you.”   She shook her head. “I tried that, but they won’t take me. They know I’m Dad’s daughter, they know his son is gone, and they know their work is dangerous. They find all kinds of excuses to fob me off. The merchant trader just wanted me to sign a two-year contract, no questions asked.”   She took a sip of her wine. “I signed it yesterday. I ship out tomorrow.”   Lady Sunfall nodded. “Okay. Just . . . be careful, all right, sweetheart?”   Selena blinked at her mother. “I expected you to be a bit more upset.”   “Of course I’m upset!” Lady Sunfall cried in an uncharacteristic display of passion. Her fork dropped from her hand and clattered on the plate. “You think I’m not upset? But we raised you to be your own person, Selena, and you’ve already made up your mind, so . . .” she cleared her throat and picked up the fork, “so why argue with you? It would just create hard feelings, and I . . . I don’t want . . .” Surprisingly, for the first time since the loss of her son, Lady Sunfall collapsed into sobs.   Lord Sunfall immediately went and put his arms around his wife, while Selena and Narissa stared, stunned. Lady Sunfall was their rock in the stormy sea. It wasn’t as though she hadn’t wept – of course she had, and frequently – but she had never yet fallen apart like this. It was stunning and a little scary.   “Oh, Ruavel,” she sighed, “I just want him back. And if I can’t have him back, I wish we hadn’t parted on such rough terms.” Ruefully the Admiral nodded. “Me too, my dear. Me too.”   “I’m sorry,” said Lady Sunfall to them both, especially to Selena. She tried to dry her tears. “I don’t mean to put this burden on you. I love you. I want you to be happy. Let’s . . . enjoy our last few hours together until you go, okay? Just in case.”   “I’m sorry, Mom,” said Selena, looking into her plate. Her eyes were shining.   “No,” said Lady Sunfall, tilting her chin up. “It is I who am sorry. You go and be happy! I wish we’d given your brother more of that advice, and less about duty.” She smiled through her tears. “Be who you are. Fly free, and with my blessing.”

Lady Sunfall stepped up to the main podium and held up a hand. It didn’t take long for the excited murmuring to die down. The Governor of Peridot almost never spoke publicly.   When she had as near to silence as a busy town square could get, she nodded to Narissa, who invoked Ansuz in some water, which she gave to Lady Sunfall to drink.   She cupped her hands to her mouth. “People of Peridot,” she said, and the enchantment carried her voice to the far edges of the square, “a grave peril has come upon us. Only by remaining calm and working together shall we weather it. Once I have spoken, the Mage Council and the City Councillors will have instructions for you. I want you to listen carefully, and when we are done, you must move calmly and quickly to obey them.”   The people murmured and fidgeted, but no one yelled out or catcalled. Perhaps they were arrested by the intense fire in the usually placid woman’s eyes.
