The World of Tower's Fall

"Do you ever think there might be... I don't know, more land out there?"
"What? Oh. Probably. But if they're not looking for us, why should we go looking for them?"
- An exchange on the docks of Wyrren
Tower's Fall is set in its own universe, on the continent of Lialin. Settled just over 500 years prior to the start of the story, the continent is now home to three nations, and a few million souls. Magic's arrival some 200 years after that added more sparks to the fire, and by the time our main story rolls around, the world is ripe for the start of something new.

Orellia

The first nation established on Lialin's soil, and for several hundred years the only significant government. Orellia translates to 'the Land of Orel[a]' in reference to its founder, Orela Dawnson. A proud nation with an unbroken monarchic line, Orellia's founding is tied to several myths and often associated with the primary god of Lialin's pantheon, The Stone Man.   The capitol of Orellia, Dawnfall, is placed near the middle of Lialin proper. The city is built on and into a singular, towering mountain, with a desert on either side. The mountain 'where the dawn rests' has become a great symbol, and a reservoir of wealth for half a millennia.   Those native to Orellia are known as the Orelli.

Aherana Islands

The smattering of islands to the Southeast were known as 'the Heretic's Islands' in years past. Now, their name translates to 'Islands of Ahera,' again named after their officially recognized founder. Ahera led the exodus of mages a few years after the first manifestation of magic, when Orellia sought to contain all new magic users. Forced to flee the continent, the 'Aheri' sailed South.   The islands themselves are nestled in a mazelike extension of reefs, sandbars, small barrier islands and rocky outcroppings so severe that no Orelli explorer had ever managed to make it to their center. Ahera and her mages lost their ship in the process - but whether through magic or tenacity, found the habitable lands further in. They've refused contact or more than very minor trade with Orellia ever since, and no one else has been able to navigate the stormy, trap filled waters.   Those native to Aherana are still known as the Aheri.

Theolin

The newest country to join the map, the 'Land of Theol' won its freedom from Orellia in the past few years. Now, its borders take up most the western 'wing' of the continent, and its freedom remains a tenacious thing. With a government in flux, revolutionaries reluctant to lay down their arms, and all the blessings and curses of unlimited potential, the nation named after an old trickster is far from settled.   A temporary capitol has been declared in the largest trading hub of the region, adapting an old Orelli lord's mansion into their palace and center of government. An interim monarchy has been chosen from among the leaders of the rebellion itself, and for now, most of the populace has been occupied with the harvest coming in on time. Yet, one of the other leaders has disappeared, and the greatest weapon in their war for freedom is no longer on the metaphorical table.   Those native to Theolin are now known as the Theoli.

Ilmira

Theolin's Living Bastion   Over the war for Theolin's independence, Ilmira earned many names. The Flame-Made-Flesh. The Sun Soul. Avatar or God form or Chosen of a deity, Saint and Demigod and devil. She's never felt that any of them fit. Born in the region that is now Theolin, Ilmira was recruited to the revolution well before her abilities manifested, working as a scribe and supply runner. Something happened on one of those runs - and soon after, the soldiers of both sides were introduced to a mage more powerful than any they'd seen before.   Though her strength ensured she became a constant on the front lines, now that the war is over, she wants nothing more than to hang up her sword and retire. The illness that's plagued her since childhood has only worsened over time; now it begins to threaten to keep her bedbound. Unfortunately, her nascent nation still desperately needs a symbol.

Kavi Thergoode

Newly Minted Squire   Kavi isn't quite a failure - but he is a disappointment. A farmer's child who only grew more withdrawn as the seasons came and went, always lagging behind his peers, Kavi doesn't even have magic to balance out the difference. His small village avoided being burned during Theolin's revolution, and Kavi himself avoided getting pulled into either army. They were not able to avoid the drain on resources and price hiked supplies after the war.   When the news came from the psuedo-Capitol that an Order of Knights was being established to serve in Ilmira's image, no one truly thought Kavi would become one of them. But they promised to accept all comers who could follow their rules, and to provide room and board to all who took part, and for a family on the verge of starvation with a son who couldn't tend the fields, it wasn't much of a choice. Yet, Ilmira takes one look at the straggling would-be-knight and immediately declares him her squire. What's more, she says she knows what he's going through - because she's got the same affliction.
