Phantasia Delirium Condition in Torlas | World Anvil

Phantasia Delirium

There are a few medicines, made to ease pain or induce calm, that can react badly to innate magic. There is a common ingredient, Goldfoil, that has been shown to be the cause of this when processed into medication. Those with innate magic have to avoid these medicines, and more than once has someone realised their magical potential due to a nasty reaction.

Causes

Despite processed Goldfoil being successfully identified as the culprit, nobody is yet sure why exactly it reacts to innate magic like this. The most perplexing thing is that it doesn't cause the same response to given magic so it can't just be the presence of magic causing the issue, but something to do with how it manifests and affects a person's physiology. Theories abound about the affect of innate magic on neurological functions and how Goldfoil reacts with it, but as of yet there are no solid explanations.

Symptoms

Sufferers of Phantasia Delirium will start exhibiting physical symptoms including sweating and dizziness within a matter of minutes. Their pupils will dilate beyond the norm of many medicines and their cheeks will flush. Within another dozen minutes the mental symptoms will begin to manifest, including reckless behavior, loosened inhibitions and heavy hallucinations. There have been many instances of people with Delirium being egged into dangerous acts by voices no-one else can hear.   Perhaps most worryingly is that people with Delirium often lose control of their magic once the mental affects kick in. They'll cast spells by accident or their spells will react unusually and unpredictably. Combined with the hallucinatory effects and lack of common sense, disastrous accidents can occur with magicians of even mediocre strength.

Treatment

Unfortunately, while Goldfoil based treatments are very common due to the high abundance of the plant across all of Torlas, things to counteract the effect are rare and hard to access. The most accessible is mid-level healing spells to remove harmful conditions from the patient. Herbal remedies are so difficult to acquire as to be functionally useless when compared to the rapid onset of Delirium, and since many mild sedatives contain Goldfoil they are also not usually an option. Most of the time it is best to use a strong sedative if possible, to keep them asleep until the affect wears off, but if people have these they are unlikely to be using Goldfoil-based treatments in the first place. For the most part, it is simply best to restrain their magic if possible and wait for the effect to fade. It takes 2-4 hours to do so.

Prevention

People with innate magic should avoid mild painkillers and sedatives if at all possible. Clinics will have specialised medications available for them in larger cities, but it will be far more of a struggle in smaller settlements. At the end of the day, the price of power that is wholly your own is that you cannot take anything to help you with pain or distress until things get very severe.

History

The first recorded case is unsure, but it became far more common knowledge after a magic-user of godly blood nearly leveled a village before being restrained by his fellows. Since then, many more precautions have been placed and the message was spread to all corners of Torlas it could reach, becoming the most widely disseminated piece of scientific literature ever.
