The Three-Residences Tradition
It is tradition for titular nobility that govern, ranking Viscount and upwards, to maintain three separate residences; the palace (the place where they hold court), their manor (their country estate, often viewed as an "ancestral seat") and their Town House (a residence in the settlement in which their liege holds court).
Traditionally, the given title holder will live, more or less full time, in the palace, and a relative will govern their personal manor, and another relative will serve as a courtier on their behalf, living out of their town-house - despite this, the tradition persists for practical reasons.
