Ust Natha

"The First" in the Drow language, Ust Natha stands in a symbolic location to mark roughly the place on the surface where the first Drow began their descent underground. This massive city carved into the stone of the Underdark's caverns now hosts a flock of feuding noble houses vying for control, as well as a host of less powerful subjects who seek the cruel sort of shelter Lolth and her children offer from the harsh underground environment.

Matriarchy, a council made up of Matron Mothers from the most prominent noble houses elect a High Matron Mother who rules unilaterally.

Infrastructure

Impossibly far-spanning stone bridges connect the Low City to the edges of the chasm around it. As one approaches down the bridge, the primary road that wraps around the stone structure of the city at a slow upward incline becomes apparent. This thoroughfare allows transport of goods up or down the spire, with steep-carved staircases serving as obvious shortcuts for those on foot.
Structures dug out into the stone line this main road, some simple tenements of a utilitarian look with others boasting ornate stonework.

Geography

Divided in two, the Lower City of Ust Natha is built into a massive stalagmite that thrusts up from the chasm the city looms over. The Upper City is carved into a stalactite hanging down from above.
