Eloryn

“Something magical happens here—everyone seems to get along. Human, elf, it doesn’t matter. There’s a place here for everyone.”
— an anonymous citizen
Eloryn is a town in the western part of Ilryn, deep in the Glass Desert.

Demographics

Eloryn is one of the few cities where elves and humans live together. Some attribute this to the fact that everyone there carries a mutual hatred of the reigning human king, Arryk Pyrran.

Industry & Trade

Eloryn is a major trading hub for elves and selei. This is partly due to the fact that they rely on trading to get many of the resources they need to survive in the desert.   There is always work to be done in Eloryn, and everyone who can work does something to help the community.

Farming

"The work's hard, and it's draining, but the people need to eat."
— an Elorynite farmer
Even though Eloryn is in a desert, farming does still happen on the outskirts of the city. Earth mages who don't become glass harvesters often go to work on the farm, since their magic is what allows crops to grow despite the poor conditions. Rather than having individual farms that they're in charge of, Elorynite farmers all work on one large farm so no one overuses their magic.

Teaching

Where there is a school, there must be teachers. The school in Eloryn is the only magic school that hires humans and selei as well as elves. Teachers are employed for as long as they want and are able to teach magic. Those who are not able to teach magic (usually due to old age or low resistance) may teach magic history or offer individual studies to students with specific interests.

Temple Work

Many people go to work in the Temple of the Salranai in the middle of the city. This is one of oldest buildings in the city, but is well-maintained and protected. The temple in Eloryn is the only Salranan temple that allows humans to enter into an apprenticeship. Humans who choose to work in the Salranan temple will get an honorary Fifth Moon ceremony, but not a Tenth Moon ceremony.

Rynsel Farming

Rynsel farming is one of the most important jobs in Eloryn, since it is their main export. Typically, this job is only available for earth and fire mages. Fire mages call lightning to strike the sand and form the glass. Earth mages then harvest and refine it. The glass is sold to be made into sculptures, windows, decorations, or vessels. Some of it is also given to the school to be studied.

History

Eloryn was originally founded as an elven glass-mining town in the Glass Desert. Early on, a school was built for mages who were interested in glass mining (primarily earth and fire mages) or interested in studying the magic-enhancing properties of the desert’s sand and the glass that was produced.   When Arryk Pyrran took control of the human kingdom, which was still fairly small at the time, humans began to arrive in Eloryn. The first were former castle servants seeking to escape Pyrran’s control, who had heard about the blossoming city from elven diplomats. As Pyrran’s control tightened over his people and word about Eloryn spread in secret, more and more people began to flee. There are rumors that Queen Asyn was planning to take her infant son to Eloryn before her death, but this has not been proven.   Eloryn is now known as a sanctuary city. The school of Eloryn is known for teaching magic history to humans and for supporting them in efforts to reduce the cost of magic.
