Bel-Hothir
Demographics
Bel-Hothir is made up of mainly humans. There are very few elves here, and fairies are virtually unheard of. Many of the people of Bel-Hothir work as artisans or laborers in the mines or farmlands surrounding the city. The lords of Bel-Hothir live here as well.
Government
The lords of Bel-Hothir are the ultimate authority, deciding on most matters with a simple majority vote. In case of a tie, the matter is settled by a white wizard who serves the council as counselor but otherwise does not have a vote and is not considered a lord of the council. Day to day administration of the city is run by vast bureaucracy of scribes, record-keepers, and bankers.
Defences
The city has a small militia which provides peace-keeping services. The
Industry & Trade
Hothir is an exporter of raw goods and imports many finished goods, though they also import wood.
Infrastructure
Bel-Hothir is famous for its docks and harbors, lying as it does at the mouth of the western river which flows from the northern hills. The cocoa plantations and sugarcane fields surrounding the city hug close to the rivers and stretch all the way north to the small mountains.
Guilds and Factions
Representatives of House Gath, House Zerah, and House Jafari rule the city and island of Hothir, forming a council of lords. House Gath owns three shipping companies while the other houses own one each. The five major shipping companies are Earl Shipping, Maxie's Mercantile Magisterium, Gull Prow, Sharktooth Enterprise, and Royal Shipping. Royal Shipping used to belong to the royal family until they died out. It is now run by House Gath.
History
For all intents and purposes, the history of the city is one with the history of the island. Founded in 1066 as a kingdom within the empire of Edinniae, the royal house of Bel-Hothir died out in 1098, succumbing to an outbreak of island rot. As the native Kaians were immune, only those Zaru families which had intermarried with the Kaians survived. The island is run by a council of lords, each of whom owns one of the five major shipping companies that control all trade and transportation on the island. These five shipping companies are run by three noble families: House Gath, House Zerah, and House Jafari. These are descended from the ruling houses of their eponymous cities. Despite a shared lineage, the House Jafari of Hothir has entered a bitter rivalry with the pirate lords of Kal-Jafari.
Architecture
The richer homes are constructed of brick and mortar, as wood is in short supply. Much of the wood for the ships has actually been imported from Zargon. The underclass dwell in adobe huts with roofs of straw or discarded driftwood. The city is surrounded by a low, ten-foot wall that ends in high rocks at either side of the harbor.
Geography
The land surrounding the city is flat and arable, surrounded by plantations to the north and west. The southern portion of the city borders the sea of Tal Ladon and is home to numerous docks within the harbor.
Natural Resources
