The Rite of Shark

A Sharkmen tradition as old as the Reef itself; Sharks of age are put to the test to prove their worth to the tribe in a gauntlet of challenges.

History

During the days before the 3 sharks were elected, the Sharkmen struggled to properly root themselves to the Reef; eventually deciding that only the most worthy Sharkmen were deserving of remaining as a part of the species. These early Sharkmen created the Rite of Shark; the Sharkmens oldest and most treasured tradition. It has been kept as a rite of passage for many becoming-adult sharks, and while the challenges involved have shifted and evolved with the times, the art of the gauntlet and how it's run has mostly remained the same.

Execution

The Gauntlet is hosted in a specially marked region of the RippleTeeth Reef; a section where the coral grows sharp and close-together, adding a natural threat to rite and its tests. A Sharkman who has already passed the Rite will observe, and, at their discretion, guide an un-rited Sharkman through the Rite of Shark and its tests, often performing the tests themselves.
The catch is; if a Sharkman fails to complete the Rite of Shark, they will be eaten by The Finned. The Sharkmen believe that each Sharkman, and their strength, will serve the Reef; be it strength in service, or strength in a filled belly. However, if the Sharkman taking the Rite is instead able to fend off The Finned; or, even instead, eat them; they will be considered capable, and as having passed the Rite of Shark.

Components and tools

The only thing a Sharkman has to pass this test is what they were born with; if it isn't enough, then they were not worthy.

Participants

There are two important figures during this Rite; the Sharkman taking The Rite of Shark; and the Sharkman that is guiding them, often called The Finned. The Rite can often be personal; it is rare, though not entirely uncommon, for the Rite to involve no other Sharkmen; though some of The Finned like to use a few other Sharkmen as a test during the Rite.

Observance

The Rites occur as soon as possible, once the Sharkman reaches of age. The Sharkmen heavily value the strength of the tribe; and to remain Un-Rited is a serious taboo.
