Yrins Surprise

Yrins kobolds have a reputation for being the oddest of the kobold tribes; successfully living and thriving in the dangerous swamps, lowlands, and mangroves of Thyr takes a certain kind of tenacity and a healthy sense of humor in the face of an environment that is constantly trying to kill them. When the Yrins decide they like an outsider and set out to make them an honorary member of the tribe, they do so by creating a great feast that is attended by the entire tribe. Yrins Surprise is a stew served at this feast, and the diminutive creatures consider it a delicacy; if an outsider can manage to keep it down after the first few spoonfuls, then they know this sentient has what it takes to survive and understands their daily struggle.    Even if the potential inductee is unable to stomach the stuff, the Yrins still welcome their new friend into the tribe, if only because at least they were brave enough to try it in the first place.

History

Yrins Surprise is considered a delicacy by the kobolds, so it is a special dish that is reserved for special occasions: the birth of a dragonborn, the transition of a new tribal leader, or the transition of a new Scalekeeper.    A story that is told by every Scalekeeper in the kobolds' oral traditions:
Hey! Hey! Gather round and listen-wise, little skinks, Pladigirp has words for your noggins!    Many, many, many, many, many moons ago, Fezwunk took a meat finder gaggle out into the reeds to find the warren meat for gullets. Found a rockbeard man face down in the muck, so tooks out his meat slicer to make ready for butcher, and rolled the rockbeard on his backside; lo, rockbeard coughed muckily and drew shaky air! Fezwunk was piqued, so made reed bed for rockbeard and made way back home; warren was tooth-glint and belly-eyed for rockbeard, but Fezwunk yelled, "No meat from the rockbeard! Rockbeard is still breathful, make way!" So Fezwunk left rockbeard with Scalemenders, and they practiced their mending ways on the rockbeard, and soon the rockbeard's shaky air was not so shaky, and the rockbeard unshuttered his eyes; Scalemenders took up brain bashers as rockbeards like to chop up scalefolk, but this rockbeard laid backwise and peacelike. Our scalemenders put away brain bashers and went back to mending the rockbeard, and rockbeard made not with the chopping, just laid backwise and did look on. A few few moons passed, and rockbeard stood upwise, but did not beat feet out of the warren; the rockbeard wandered the warren and after a time, he did muckwork! Rockbeard mended well, and did big muckwork; our scalefolk took a shine to this rockbeard who spoke the scaletongue and did laugh at scalefolk cavorting and japing. Few moons more passed, and Chieftain Stobamosh Driximunt took the Big Chair and the warren did throw a shindy for the new Chief, and lo, did the rockbeard cavort and jape with the best of us scalefolk! And when the cook did present the Slurp Feast, the scalefolk gave the rockbeard a bowl and did gather round for the looking; the rockbeard did look askance, and he did poke the stew eye, but lo, did the rockbeard drink down the Slurp Feast, eye and all! And lo, did the rockbeard not upchuck! And thus was born Eyebeard the Scalefriend!
Since that time, the Yrins use this stew as a rite of passage for other sentients to become honorary members of the tribe.

Execution

A big party is thrown for the honorary tribe member to be inducted, and it is filled with cavorting, pranks, and dancing; the culmination of the event is when the cook comes out with the stew. The tribe members seat their honored friend at a table overseen by the chieftain, and large procession led by the cook carrying a bowl full of Yrins Surprise marches noisily to the table and sets the bowl down in front of the inductee.

Components and tools

Yrins kobolds eat just about anything they find in the swamp, but Yrins Surprise is notable for the fact that the main ingredient is the eye of a froghemoth, hence why it is only served on the most special of occasions, as it takes many kobolds to bring down one of these strange monsters. They put all three eyes of the creature, along with its sliced tentacles into a large stew pot with a variety of herbs, plants, and spices, and swamp water for the base; for Yrins, these three things are usually whatever is at hand or looks edible, so some common ingredients include:
  • Bullrush
  • Duckweed
  • Hanging Moss
  • Tree roots or bark

Participants

The entire tribe shows up for the spectacle and to see if the sentient is going to be able to keep the stew down or vomit, and the chieftain presides, usually sitting on his throne, or standing on the table. The cook also stands next to the inductee, if only to see if he is able to induce vomiting.

Observance

There is no cycle, the Yrins perform this rite when they really like a non-kobold who proves itself in some way to them.
