The Quarry

The Quarry lies on the eastern coast of the Main Continent. Population size is absurdly large, the size of the city is also absurdly large. It's a maze of tunnels and walls, hospitable to almost all creatures. Dwarves are the largest percentage that live in The Quarry. The Quarry sit on the rough salty plains where there is little vegetation growth beyond the entrance. there are no surrounding villages or towns, the weather on this side of the continent is too fierce for most. But the wall of The Quarry are made of the hardest stone, Living Rune Rock. Living Rune Rocks are rare, said to be made from the foundations of the world. They cannot be broken or carved, and do not weather with age. Some are lucky to find bits in mountains, and these tend to be made into beautiful charms and jewelry. However, The Quarry is a solid piece of Living Rune Rock. The Dwarves, and others who have joined them, began escavating the rock long ago. Now, they believe the most advanced team of "divers" has reached 800 m below sea level, with no signs of stopping. Diverse in population and culture, The Quarry is divided into "cubits", each tending to have a different tone to them. A cubit is 100 m3 typically, though due to the inability to change the structure of any walls, sometimes they are larger or smaller. Cubits are differentiated by painted patterns. These patterns become a cubit's crest. The overarching government is the Dwarve Exploration Guild, which takes up three entire cubits, not including the library, and living quarters. Representatives from each cubit will regularly meet in the DEG cubits for trade meetings and state of affairs. They have a system to respond to natural disasters, war, famine, etc. but there has never been a need to implement any of these. One major concern is the absurd amount of socks that appear. The storing and disposal of socks is one of The Quarry's biggest issues. An old issue, that has long been settled, is the public use of light. Light shafts are public areas for all to use, and the top three layers of cubits that are in the sun are public dominion as well. This layer is referred to as the Light Gardens., with each cubit having a different garden name. Long before, many of the upper class would refuse to let others to use their light, so it was common for peoples to be born and live without ever seeing the sun. With the public use of light, refracting stone vanes were installed into the craved crevices of the Living Rune Stone to bring light to all corners of The Quarry.
