Session 8 - Sidequest-A-Palooza
Over breakfast a very well-appointed noblewoman approached the group and asked to speak to Lun privately. Naturally, everyone listened in. This was Errin, a paramour of Lun. She apologised for 'getting him in trouble' and said she'd asked after him at the guard precinct where he was jailed but they wouldn't tell her anything, but was pleased she'd finally 'tracked him down'. Definite obsessive undertones. She also mentioned her husband had calmed down again, hinting at why Lun might have ended up in jail to begin with. She made him promise to spend some more time with her, though he managed to shake her off eventually.
Kyto convinced the others they needed to do the morgue now or never. Subsequently the group decided infiltrate the morgue at night and spend the day tracking down Hosun's runaway dress, to get started to acquiring some finery for the ball.
They found it in Emporium, where the garmnent had twisted in a living cloak that animated objects around it. It immediately fled, resulting in a chase through the streets and a fight against several inanimate brooms, swords and carpets. There was also a chickenado (that's a chicken tornado) and a large excitable dog drawn in by the chaos. Tera used her angelic wings in public to fly and capture the cloak before it could escape again. Shinzu rescued a chicken and decided to keep it as a pet.
Once the cloak had been captured it seemed more placid, and they were able to coax it to come with them. As they left the market Kyto to spot a young man following the group, specifically looking at Tera. Wary of fiendsih attention the group confronted their stalker head-on. It emerged that having seen her angelic form the man thought Tera was a celestial, and asked if she could help his younger brother who was sick. Sympathetic to the plight, Tera agreed to at least look at the brother.
'Sick' turned out to be 'possessed by a devil' after the child made a foolish bargain. The possessing fiend was no good at pretending to be an innocent child and soon gave up the jig when questioned, although refused to give up the child's body. Sekket was in favour of killing the child, much to the horror of the more moral members of the group. Trying to question it instead, the fiend stated several devils were trying to get out of the Hells because 'something underneath us', e.g. located in the Abyss, was moving around and 'making everyone uncomfortable'. After failing to convince the fiend to leave, Lun used Suggestion to make it come out, where it turned out to be a Spined Devil - so not a particularly strong fiend, one easily overwhelmed with all the group against it. Killing it sent it back to the Hells. The older brother was grateful, although hadn't much to give as a reward.
After that diversion the group returned to Hosun who promised to turn the rebellious cloak into a dress, and to return in a few days.
That night the group infiltrated the morgue with some distraction from Nishigi and her familiar, a particularly ragged-looking crow who could mimic voices. The area was patrolled bu guards, and Nishigi stated these would not be amenable to them claiming to be helping the imperial guard this time. Approaching the morgue, the roof was guarded by Dawnsworn. In order to avoid the guards, Yunhu cast Fog Cloud as cover, while Nishigi was able to smuggle her familiar inside the morgue and animate several corpses through it. These staggered from the morgue and thoroughly distracted the guards, but the group saw what could only be a member of the elite Dawnsworn drop from the roof and behead an undead in one strike, leading them to realise the Dawnsworn were not to be taken lightly.
Nonetheless in the distraction the group could enter the morgue undetected. After exploring the building, the group come across a room with two bodies encased in ice, labelled cadavers 63 and 64. No. 64 appeared to be an unrecognised dead male, and no. 63 appeared to be a female. Kyto recognised the face of the female body, although from spoilery background reasons he did not share this information with the group. After extracting one of the cadavers from ice, several spiders crawled out of its mouth, thoroughly wigging the group out. The body then opened its eyes and promptly shifted into a strange fiendish-looking humanoid before attacking the group! The spiders that had emerged from its shifted into imps to aid the battle. The other cadaver was still frozen and so remained inert.
It was a difficult fight but the group were able to subdue the strange fiend before they could draw attention from the guard. With clever use of Enlarge/Shrink they made both bodies small enough to carry out. They promptly fled the morgue, ending the session there...
